Inspired by Johnny Payphone, me and a minion built this abomination last weekend:

Need to make some changes before it's good, but not bad for a first tallbike, I think :)

It looks good...what changes are you going to make?

My first response was to laugh, but not in a bad way. Its wonderful, quite creative.

It looks like a blast! Is turning abrupt with such a short wheelbase?

I love it...also like to know what changes does it need. Cool idea, although I am not into tall bikes cause I like to be able to touch ground.

Cool ass.
My own version of that has been on my to-do list since I saw the original. Still not even close to starting.

Hi los buenos, welcome to BikeForums!

Let's see some of your bikes :D .

im still workin on all of them but they all ride at the moment. i built all these myself, except for the crimestopper,i built that with my buddy one night

im also thinking about spokeing some car rims and puting them on the back of the spincycle

That's a nice batch of bikes, and I am in awe of your work space, too!

thank you i have lots of space, it was my dads haven, but he died last summer and i kinda took over, it is around 30 feet by 60(?) feet and has 2 cars parked in it usually, still leaving half of the room for me, heated even!:)

Looks rather fragile to me- like it could just bend there at the top. Good luck with it.

andygates
02-21-08, 03:08 PM
Oh, it's fragile as hell. The welds all want gussets adding. I've stripped the bars since, too, so there's just a front (header! aiee!) brake for now. It's surprisingly graceful up there once the panic subsides (and bam! down I go again)... it could also do with a second peg on the other side for my lefty mounting clumsiness. And, y'know, paint ;)

Lz4005 - I was in the same place, until I lucked out on some bent pipe perfect for the spine, on a clear dry day, with a free minion. With a gift like that you gotta play.

that's the part im lacking on mine so far too, a spine

Just use a trail-a-bike for a spine. That's what I'm gonna do.

Haha! No, not quite! I meant you could use the trail-a-bike as the spine for a pennyfakething like this:

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j242/hawkingnovember/pennyfakething.jpg

This way you could add a rear brake and have a little more structural rigidity. Even better would be to chop off the arc at the top and flip it so that the spine has a "ridgeback" for stepping on or to add a rack. I'm just thinking out loud at this point.

p.s. your bike is awesome and and it's inspiring me to do the same!

im trying to visualize that but all i can think of is a, slightly bent in on the (original) top and enlongated, 20" bike frame
do you think i could save some money and slightly modify a frame i already have?

It's hard to explain. I'll have to draw a pic and scan it. I don't know how you'd modify an existing frame to become a spine. When I make mine, I'll be going with the trek trail-a-bike pictured above 'cuz it's steel and already has the curve I need and a place to mount a rear brake. I'm going to look for a used one locally.

It looks like it has negative trail on the steering. If so, that should be fixed.

What are you, the bike police? Unless you've built a pennyfakething I don't really think you're qualified to offer advice.

I saw the picture.. that's a beefy BMX frame. It looks like you'll have a tidy, trustworthy little 'fakething once you're finished.

For a spine try the ole dumpster-bending-machine... draw the curve you want in chalk on the alley pavement, then stick a pipe into the forklift slots on a dumpster. Bend, move 1", bend, move 1" etc until you've matched your curve.

I always thought a trail-a-bike would make a good tallbike trailer.

Here's my latest, a "mini-Winnie" minifakething. Much safer. How's the trail you frameweiners? This bike rides like a dream, especially bombing downhill.

http://non.primate.net/chopper/miniwinnie.jpg

I chopped up an old awning for the armature.

Here's what I did on my first one:

http://non.primate.net/chopper/pickupstyx2.jpg

The problem is, without a smooth curve, your rapid unintentional rear dismount results in busting your **** on the frame. A few years ago I swore I'd never ride this accursed thing again after hurting myself too much. For Winifred I used a hydraulic bender on a fence post. The cement inside helps keep the rear wheel on the ground.

what about a tandem, 2 wheel drive pennyfakechopper? just pop a seat up higher on the curve, a little ahead of the handlebars, put a headtube on the ende and put the rest on there? it would look funny and nothing like its old-timey counterpart

I thank you, I know of a used one that's cheap (both in price and probably quality) that has no mounting hardware.

the person in the back powering the back wheel, and the person in the front, the front wheel?

Step 1 make 2x2 tandem pennyfakethink
Step 2 ???
Step 3 Profit

That's a damn good idea. You could even use a smaller (20") framed bike for the front part.

I saw this exact bike at Burning Man. It was a husband-and-wife couple. The very end of the armature/spine was a kid's bike, and the wife was sitting down there pedaling away while the husband was up on top. She had her face right in the crack of his ass.

Don't forget the possibilities of applying pennyfakething technology to the Rucker Tandem:

Tires inflated? Check.
Ass in Face? Check.
Right, then. We're off!"

I might ;)

Nonsense. If you're 16, you're old enough to patiently explain that this is the start of your career in building bikes by hand. Yes, there's money in it. Explain to her that this is a lot better for you than driving in cars. It's far less expensive for her if she doesn't have to pay your car insurance.

If you need more good reasons to tell your mom, let us know.

my good reason is the lack of a licence and the lack of needing one out here in the sticks, there's nowhere to go! :)

Okay it wasn't that exact bike but it looked just like it, except the front guy was taller so her face was level with his buttocks. Great picture, though. I think I've seen that bike but I can't remember where. This is the problem with getting drunk at festivals for a living, it all blends together.

i was inspired by this thread and the steampunk article and finished mine last night! i couldnt find a pipe strong enough for the spine cuz all i have is a ton of emt so i used some gazelle forks it turned out buetifully! i would have posted it earlier but i have been ridin it all day!:D i am soo happy with it, this is the first bike that i made that has absolutly no reason for existing other than because i could make it.
i think penny fakethings should also qualify as tallchoppers, cuz they basically are just the seat is on the chopper forks and it is turned around, but that shouldnt stop it from being a tallchopper.
