Looking over an upcoming race lineup, I see the following (among others):

Cat 4, 44 miles - 8:00am
Cat 5A, 25 miles - 8:10am
Cat 4 / 5B, 25 miles - 11:00am

Does this mean that there are just two different choices for Cat 4 & 5 racers or is there actually a distinction between Cat 5A & B?

yup, 2 different choices.

Though you might should link the flier as well so we can see the description

A single category Cat 5 field is limited to 50. My assumption is they added the extra mixed 4/5 to make more spots. The 5B race will likely be harder because there will be 4's, plus the moreambitious Cat 5's are likely to be in that race, and the brand new 5's will likely sign up for the 5A.

So the 4/5B is likely to be harder, but you'd be riding with people with a little more bike handling experience.

From what you posted, it means there is a Cat 4 race, a Cat 5 race, and a mixed 4/5 race. Sometimes, the mixed 4/5 race will be the top x finishers from the earlier Cat 4 and Cat 5 races.

Cat 4, 44 miles = real men
Cat 5A, 25 miles = regular beginners
Cat 4 / 5B, 25 miles = ambitious beginners and panzy 4s

That's my take :D

Cat 4, 44 miles = real men
Cat 5A, 25 miles = regular beginners
Cat 4 / 5B, 25 miles = ambitious beginners and panzy 4s and 4/5's that want to get another race in

That's my take :D

I'd seriously consider racing twice, personally.
