I am 6'4" / 170 lbs and feel extremely skinny. Unles your racing, think of your "extra weight" as more resistance. If you can hold a 22mph pace at 145lbs, imagine how fast you will be at 130.

One of the guys I ride with is pushing 300 lbs, he has no problem keeping up with the group. Infact, everyone loves to draft him for some odd reason... :)

6'1" @ 180lbs I tried to get down to 170 but I would hit it and then eat like I was starving but I wasn't. Guess 180 is my weight.

I'm 5'6" and float around 145lbs. According to charts and rough estimates, that puts me at 5lbs. over my ideal weight (whatever that means). I admittedly creep closer to 150lbs. around the holidays though. :D I used to weigh 125lbs. to 130lbs. back in my starving college student and racing (MTB) days.

I'm 5'7" and weigh 150lbs. in the winter. And in the summer
I'll get down to around 142lbs by just riding. I use to be able
to eat just about anything I wanted to, but now that I'm getting
older it is getting harder.

haha, i'm 176cm(5'9") and weigh 57kg(127 pounds), beat that. haha, i can say that i look real skinny. haha, one of my teacher really complains about that. haha. Still have quite a bit of fats here and there, but can really gain from some muscle mass to improve my strength and power output.

Can i give you guys one sugggestion? Try using both the metric and imperial? It'll be much easier for comparison. 1 inch is about 2.5 cm and that makes a big difference between 5'9" and 5'10"

oxologic- we here in the USA are not as well versed on the metric and imperical, so forgive us for the lack of metric knowledge on our part!

Personally, if I hadn't travelled abroad, I still wouldn't have much knowledge of the metric system!

Which weight do YOU prefer? Being 145 you are now or the 127 you were before? something in between?

I'm 5'7" and was at 127 at one point. That was my best cycling weight. I feel this was when I was at my strongest as far as biking goes. Now I'm 133-135. I feel better now OVERALL than when I was lighter cuz I'm doing more weight lifting these days, less biking. I think I'm going to stick around this weight cuz I don't look as scrawny.

Our paceline runs 20-22 mph. We have one woman in the paceline and I hate riding behind her. She is probably 5'6" and am guessing she weighs in at about 125. When she pulls and I am behind her it is like I am pulling twice because she blocks so little wind when she is in the drops. And then it is my pull. Riding behind her is always extra work because of this, regardless of where one is in the paceline. Sorry Franchine, but I wish you weighed 150 so you could block more wind. Or you would wear shoulder pads.

Gee you are lucky. We had a lady who was almost 5'2" and she might have weighed 110 but I doubt it. She would get up front and get down in the drops and I could easily see the road in front of her! Next to her, your gal is like motor pacing!

Now I am 6' and 190 lbs. I could lose a bit more but I am close to lean at that weight. I used to ride with a guy who was 6'6" and 240. People used to love to get behind us in a double paceline and we liked pulling. But I wonder why we were so popular?

My Gawd, 125lbs?????..... These sort of guys don't have any muscle mass at all to speak of, which I hate. I have to have my big quads which I get from doing heavy Leg exetensions on my multi-gym and then get the "Ripped" effect from the cardio. When I do go out riding, I make sure I get the supplements I need so I don't get any musclular breakdown. Just looking at the World championships in Hamiliton and seeing upclose how much muscle mass David Millar has is NON existent, he didn't have one bit of "viewable" muscle in his legs. If you were to ask me, Professional cyclists remind me a little of the catwalk supermodels, the look of not being very healthy. I know cyclists are healthy but the overall look of the two remind me of being the same.

If I was getting paid thousands of pounds for riding a bike, I would get my weight down there pound 4 pound pretty easily, (6'0 feet). It would take around 1000 miles of contant cycling and absolutley NO Whey protein, Glutamine, Creatine etc to help in the aid of absolute muscle breakdown.

In my opinion, better than the height/weight analysis is looking at body fat %. I bought a Tanita scale last week and have started to track my weight and body fat %. The scale is supposed to be very accurate and is not that expensive (around $70).

I have a friend who races, and is around 7% body fat. That's way lower than where I want to be, which is somewhere around the middle of the "healthy" range (11% to 21%) for my weight.

Jan Ulrich HUGE...

????????????????????????????????????????........

No, Kevin Levrone, Ronnie Coleman are huge. If where talking in terms of Cycling & not bodybuilding then there are still no huge people involved in the sport. When I watch cycling on TV ie World Championships, I don't think to myslef, damn them sprinters are huge. They all look the same to me, very skinny...

Hey, Renault - you are a monster, just like JU. But can you ride like JU?

Are we talking about Jan Ulrich in the sense of "A monster of cycling" (Which he is), or a "Monster of physical appearance" (Which he isn't)???...

I admit one thing though, when you see Jan with his earing in, he looks like one tough Mother&^%%$$... If only he had the self discipline to go along with his great talent..

5'9" and 135 my lowest was last year when I hit 124. That was unhealthy but that was during the winter when I was running track and averaging round 50 miles a week. Its tempting to drop to 130 for the upcoming race season.

I'm 5'7'' -> 5'8'' (seems like a popular height range here...albeit compared to the general population it's rather short for males) and I weigh 150lbs

However, living on campus, studying all day, and eating cafeteria food is putting a huge dent on my physical fitness. I'm aiming to get to 140lbs for the summer racing season.

i'm 5'8 and 160 to 165. I may not be the first guy up on a long climb, but I have the horsepower to fly on the flats and move pretty fast on the short climbs.

I think if you're drafting behind someone small, it's ok to take a shorter pull. The important thing is to be strong enough to recover without being dropped.

back in the good ol' days, when I was riding to college, I weighed 141 (I'm 5'8") and everyone guessed me at 125-130 lbs. Those were the days.

And you know what really chaps me is that in highschool I weighed 165 and felt soooooo fat and now I would give my eyeteeth to be back at that weight!

I'm about 6'4" (193cm) and 140-145lbs (63.5-65.7kg). I dunno what an 'ideal weight' chart would say about it, but I've been able to knock off a few marathons pretty quickly and keep up on a bike with most riders I know, so it works for me.

Your calculated Body Mass Index is 22.7. This is well inside of what the government has established as the overweight BMI point, which is any BMI greater than 25.

What are eyeteeth??

They're the fangs (or the heredtary remnants thereof) in your tooth lineup, the ones on either side of your incisors in the middle of your smile.

Aren't they?

Aha! they are:
The canine teeth in the upper jaw, so named for their position under the eyes!

Just looked it up in our giant Webster's Dictionary. . . ;)

I'm 6'5" and weigh 243 lbs. Been mountain biking for awhile but just bought a Trek 5200 for the road. I'm almost afraid I'm too heavy for the carbon frame. Any other larger bicyclists out there?

I'm 5'10 and weigh between 165 and 170. It's very tightly packed, my estimated weight from others is around 155, so I'm actually 10-15 pounds heavier than I look. Despite my weight, I am strong in the mountains, and stay pretty competitive on flatter ground as well. I do a lot of weight training, so I'm sure that adds mass that I wouldn't have otherwise, so I might actually be 155 without the weight training, but I enjoy it too much to give it up.

O/k folks, lets get technical here.
All this talk of "Clydesdale`s", "Skinny`s". And on, can be categorised as belonging to three basic human body structures.

Mainly due to the inherited Genes handed down through our parental and family trend.

The three basic body shapes are known as, "Ectomorph", this is a person of probably quite tall structure, with long thin arms, similar legs and body,

The second group, is known as the "Mesomorph". This group makes up the majority of the population body shape, often classified as of being of "medium biuld. These types are the ones with the ability to fluctute a great deal between body weights. That is the ability to lose lbs by specific exercises or put on many lbs with the lack of...

The final group is the "Endomorph". Sorry if there are people reading who are of this inclinassion, and bad luck, but I hope most of us on the bike forums are not in this category, "Obeasity" comes to mind when describing this group, enough said.

My category.... 6ft and 140 lbs, may put on a few lbs during the less intense Winter period. So I guess I`m a skinny, sorry "Ectomorph".....

Maajr - my 5200 has put up with me. I was 5' 8" 192 and following my divorce got as high as 230. I'm riding again and am passing thru 213 atm. I have lifted weights for 25 years and I swear I can hear the bike cry when I sprint, but zero problems with it.

As for weighing 127, I havent seen that since the 5th grade.

As I pass folks on the downhills I yell FTFG....(Follow the fat guy) I always get a few takers. =)

[ I have a 48" chest and when I did my double century I could bench 300 strict. Granted my BF% was around 14 or so and I wouldnt mind it lower but I'm built like a fire plug.

And you have your physics all backwards. I would have the heart attack on the way up the hill, you on the other hand would suffer on the way down trying to keep up. =)

As for the topic of the thread tho, after a certain point in ones life larger muscles are for the most part cosmetic. I would peg my ideal weight to be around 180. Tho I would still be a huge cyclist. Ultimatly though its what ever a person is content pushing up a hill that is their ideal weight.

I am 6'5 and usually between 245 and 235 depending how cut I am at the time. My body fat is very low however. Going to try some track cycling this summer and although I am a lot heavier than most roadies, my quad strength should help me out in the velodrome as I have always been a good sprinter.

Remember that scale weight is not as imprtant as body fat percentage, overall fitness and how you feel. I have some clients who are 6'0 180 who are in a lot different shape than another person who is also 6'0 180.
