Northern California - Any shops do layaways?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
As the title states... are there any shops in the bay area that do layaways? I eventually would like to buy some better wheels but I don't have the $$ on hand nor will the wife let me finance them via CC's!
I've heard of people doing layaways at clothing stores but I was wondering if any bikes shops do that as well.
It probably won't be a for a while, if at all, but I was bored and I wanted to see what options are out there.

What kind of wheels do you have in mind? I know many shops that do lay-away.

I think you are better off saving the money on your own rather than doing a lay-away. You might find better deals elsewhere when you're ready and not lock into buying from the shop. Unless, you're getting a killer deal from the shop.
I agree with steel.. what exactly are you looking to get? If you're looking for some crazy high end deep dish carbon aero rim.. then all you need to do is wait and watch ebay / craigslist or here. Just after and just before racing season starts a lot of riders look to dump their old gear in favor of new.. or have been given newer gear and are looking to get a few bucks for their old stuff.
You don't have to commit to anything and if its a local seller then you can always check out the item yourself.. There is the lack of assurance because you bought it from some guy / gal you've never met, but chances are you can save enough that you might be able to get them with a "cash withdrawl" on your CC and finance it that way. If you manage to save a bundle then maybe the wife wont mind meeting in the middle on the financial argument:D.
Just my thoughts.. you'll be the one riding the wheelset so do whatever makes you feel happy. Good luck with your search and make sure to show them off in the "what did you buy" thread when you get them :)

Inquiring minds want to know... What wheels do you want to get?
Honestly, there are many wheels out there that interest me. I'm not looking for crazy exotic Zipp's or something like that. Maybe SL's or a few others I can't think of at the moment. I'd like to get a nice set in the 1500grams or less category. A friend of mine that used to race back in MN said that the best upgrade you can make is a nice set of light wheels. So, of course, the gears start churning in my knuckle head and I try to come up with possible scenarios that won't piss off my wife. hehe!
We have a joint account and our respective play $$ accounts. My account isn't very full at the moment so I was thinking that maybe I can do a layaway deal and spread the pain, I mean payments out a little.
I currently have a set of Equipes that are fine but since I've been building up my new bike I get delusions of grandeur and have caught the "upgrade bug"!!
(Ya know... I'm slowly talking myself out of a new set of wheels...)
I've seen great deals on the net for Easton Ascent II's and so on but I don't have the cash on hand to get them. I tried to see if anyone would trade my Equipes for a lighter set of wheels or even Elites plus cash on my end but no good bites. I've even thought about selling my old Allez Elite but it has sentimental value since it's my first road bike and I've done two MS rides on it for my friends with MS.
Anyway... how do those of you with tight budgets afford nice bike stuff?
BigSean - what shops do you know that are favorable to layaways? Do they have any good deals at the moment? :)
Do they have group meetings for people like me? hehe!

Actually the best deal I have seen lately is at Jenson for Easton Ascent II's for $399, they are $800 at list price. I have a set and they are great. Aside from that, Cupertino Bike shop is very accomadating. Or perhaps I may sell my Eastons when you are ready. Our team buy is this weekend so I may end up with a new set of wheels.

What... you don't have a secret credit card for your toys??? Check out GORIDE in Redwood City. I bought a C'dale CAAD 9 and did the layaway thing for 3 months....
