I hear the mention of "average speed" . To say "my average speed is......" is this figured on open road with no stops, in city stuff, up and down hills or just open flat road?

usually the cyclocomputer determines ave speed by dividing the trip distance over trip time. The timer stops when there is no signal, this happens when you are at stop.. Then, the average speed here doesn't include stops, but includes the slowing down before you come to a complete stop.

Open road, uphill, downhill? You can specify if you like... It really depends on your route. For example, my route has some flat roads, some uphill w/c takes me 500m(elevation) up, and a downhill.. this route is about 28kms and i average about 22-23kmh for the entire course, no stops.

Average speed gives me a day-to-dayn sense of continuity. To make sure that I give myself the kind of warm-up I need (usually high cadence, low speed) and not go too fast too early, I reset after about 3 miles and don't change it for the rest of the ride. Toward the end I consider my average speed for the ride what the computer says when I come to the top of the steep hill a mile from my house. The last mile has several stop signs and lots of kids playing in the street, so I don't think of it in my average. Just my own way of doing things, but I think it gives a fair reading.
