I liked Sea Change by Beck...One cut seemed to be way above all others..
Just bought Joe Firstman.." The War of Women." Like it.
There have been a number of recordings of Superstar, including a movie soundtrack. The movie was silly and overdone. The original broadway cast recording was definitive.
There was a version that played on PBS a couple of years ago, that I rather liked. The character of Judas was played as a punk in a leather jacket. Jesus was unfortunately blonde.
My favorite recording of Jesus Christ Superstar was called "A Resurrection" and features the Indigo Girls in the roles of Mary Magdelene and Jesus. It's disconcerting at first, but somehow works.
Right now I'm listening to "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration" which uses the texts from the Messiah but sets them to Gospel, Spiritual, R & B, and even Hip Hop arrangements. It's pretty cool.
I think I saw the one on PBS you were talking about. The dude in the leather was cool. I did hate the movie, and listening to Tim Rice talk about his experiences with the making of the movie was just laughable. They need to update it.
Dude in the leather jacket was awesome. That was probably the best recording, but I can't seem to find it.

Destroy the auto's of the rich, knives of U-locks, you choose which- Bike punks, for life, BIKE PUNKS!
Our fallen comrades, you we mourn.... drunken drivers be forewarned- Bike punks, till death, BIKE PUNKS!"

To say the least, I definitely expected a lot more kids here to be into Punk/Hardcore/Crust/etc. Disappointing!
So far today:

Crass only sucks if you're more interested in guitar chords than social issues.
Having said that I used to be all about the American Hardcore; Adolescents, Verbal Abuse, Void, Faith, the old Fits, Bad Brains, etc.
...that's just when I was a moron though....
*ouch* O.k. that might have been construed as mean, but it's also true.
Anyhow, anarcho-punks need to not be as concerned with the mainstream bands, Crass, Conflict, etc, there are MANY many good bands with good messages not half as famous as those, too many to list. (Youth In Asia, Omega Tribe, The Suspects, etc.) I just wish Crass fans weren't as elitist as they sometimes are.
But really it's all about Player King from Seattle. They rocked.

Faith is amazing. I love anything that has to do with the DC/Annapolis scene from '84 to '86. Rites of Spring, Embrace, Gray Matter, Moss Icon, etc. Personally I dig the early-to-mid-90s scene in California/Michigan/Florida the most: Indian Summer, Navio Forge, Embassy, Mohinder, Heroin, Second Story Window, Chino Horde, Ordination of Aaron, Moonraker...so glad there has been a resurgance of this style all over the country in the last three or four years. But I don't think most people into straight-up Hardcore/Punk bands would dig stuff like this, other than a few Heroin songs from the LP and second 7".

I don't really think Crass is the best anarcho-punk band ever. Musically, I'd pick The Apostles or A//Political as a favourite (even though both sound nothing alike; they were just very good at what they did). But from the aspect of impact on the movement, Crass, to me, is the most important.

I didn't know that the music you listened to measured the intelligence you claim to have. Odd...to each their own.
We all dig our own graves. Just depends on what shovel you choose. I tire of politics, plus since when has punk had anything new to say (no a dig, but a question. Remember, I may not listen to your brand of "Smart Punk")? Same ideas, same issues, just newer a-holes running the countries. You can still take SubHumans tunes and apply them today. As well as SLF. What's the point? Tell what you have changed in this mess of a country. Or is the music your means to looking smart?

I didn't know that the music you listened to measured the intelligence you claim to have. Odd...to each their own.
No, the music you listen to doesn't often have any direct tie to your inteligence. I know quite a few really clueless crass fans, and several realy inteligent SOA kind of people... and in some sub-conscious way I'm sure I do think it makes me look smart, though consciously, I just like the sound.
Bassicaly radical punk music has brought about lots of awareness, but it's not THE way to change things, no. Crass didn't exactly destroy hierarchy, but they did get a lot of people thinking about it and working on it.
I personaly do community organizing work, and I don't consider that to be musicaly-oriented.
But as for current punk politics, I would argue that Conflict is pretty up-to date, what with their newest album talking about 9-11 and Carlo Guliani (sp?) and in general anti-authoritarian politics will ring true as long as authority exists. (more true than say.. the Greatfull Dead's flower power...) also all of thier gigs are charity events for stuff like the ALF etc. ... better than a lot of bands.
However, I don't really want to start some argument about this (more than I already have) so whatever. Still friends? *gimme a hug, you*
It's the bikes that matter!
P.S. A//political kicks ass, though I still havn't actualy found anything of theirs. (damn)

There are a lot of current Punk/whatever bands who's messages are a lot more "advanced" (I say this meaning they've changed, not that they're "better") or different than those of, say, 1984. Books Lie (soon to be nonexistent) has some of the most well thought-out, intelligent, awesome messages I've ever had the pleasure of having blasted at me in a cramped 125-degree basement. As far as other current DIY bands with lyrics and messages that have grown past the overly cliché themes of hating the government and getting wicked plastered, I'd have to say one of the most unique and intelligent bands in the Punk scene ever is Sinaloa, from Boston. Once again, not something that fans of straight-up Hardcore/Punk might enjoy, but this band is doing really great things. You can read their lyrics on the right side of the page:

so true, people often think it's all dead and gone, like just some 80's thing. Maybe it's not "new" anymore, but it still sounds good and is fun to listen to, and has a message, that's what counts.
I'm having a hard time comming to terms with the fact that there really aren't many, if any r(A)d punk bands in my city (portland)... that's why I started my own.

I'll probably be moving to Portland in about six years. There are great bands in Portland: Life at These Speeds (one of my favourite current bands; ex-Arrayo Seco), NoArmsNoLegs, Mustaphamond, They Found My Naked Corpse Face Down in the Snow (member of NoArmsNoLegs), etc. My friend Jerry (of NoArmsNoLegs and They Found...) runs a record company called Limbless, based in Portland. Grey Sky records is also out of Portland, and puts out good ****.

That's possible, but they play a bunch of shows all over Portland all the time. When they came out here, they played my friend Josh's basement and it was all ages. Then again, house/basement shows are, in every single instance I've ever experienced, always all ages. I'm sure you can catch them sometime at an all ages show. If you want to hear them before you go to a show of theirs, I can upload a couple songs from the LP to my server for you to check out.
