I'm really into the plan-it-x scene(This Bike is a pipe Bomb, Ghost Mice, Defiance Ohio...) 80's british anarcho/peace punk(Zounds, Poison Girls, Blyth Power, Hagar The Womb, Omega Tribe...) Garage Rock stuff (Deadly Snakes, Dirtbombs, Gories, Space****s, Les sexareenos, sonics...), Folk (Woody Guthrie, Bob dylan, Billy Bragg), and then some indie but mostly just the indie like Neutral milk hotel, the decemberists, and spoon type stuff.

Nice choices! Defiance, Ohio was one of the best shows I've ever been to. It was in a small kitchen (about seven-by-seven feet) full of about thirty kids. Ghost Mice is awesome as well; hope they come to Michigan eventually so I can check them out live. Plan-it-X is one of the best record labels in the underground today.

Have you heard Rosa at all? They've got a couple live sets up here: http://www.the-stripe.com/rosa The Max G. Aarnold Bazaar show is awesome, especially "Alaska," "Milkcrates" and "Umm like yr Smile..." They've got a 7" out on Open Kitchen, which is run by Brad (acoustic guitar) and his mum out of their home. I dunno if you're familiar with Die, Emperor! Die! (two-piece from Houston, Texas), but both boys from DED are in Rosa, as well as a lady and another boy. It's acoustic guitar, snare drum, washtub bass, and violin/fiddle/harmonica/mandolin/etc. I saw them in my friend Josh's basement over the summer and it was a whole bunch of fun.

Ghost mice were supposed to play here last year but they canceled, and same with tbiapb and the devil is electric. I really want to see any of those bands.

I have not actually heard Rosa, i've heard their name a lot but never listened to them, same with DED. I'll check them out.

Die, Emperor! Die! isn't Folk-Punk kinda stuff at all. It's Kirke on guitar and vocals, and Brad doing drums and some background vocals. A lot of influence from mid-90s "Emo" (real Emo, not whiney Indie **** with terribly trite and cliché lyrics)/Hardcore bands, but it's a bit faster than most of those bands were. Personal/political lyrics, DIY-as-**** ethics. They are or have been in a whole bunch of bands together: E.O.S. (Anarcho-Punk; put out a split 7"), DANGER (weird poppy/funny/political jawns I've seen compared to Beat Happening, put out a demo tape), The Sewin' Machines (the definition of lo-fi; demo tape), Rosa (mentioned before), and probably a few others. Die, Emperor! Die! has a good amount of stuff out: demo tape (out-of-print, but the best demo I've ever heard), split 7" with Burned Out Bright (out-of-print), live tape (from Burned Out Bright's last show), acoustic CD-R (including Hank Williams Sr., Minor Threat, Rites of Spring, and Leadbelly covers), split 7" with Toru Okada (this is impossible to get...the kid who put them out ripped off a bunch of people, including me, but he says he'll send them out eventually), and a song on The Microwave Says to the Pacemaker 2x7" (recently repressed, I believe; the originals, and maybe the represses, have an accidental lock-groove during the Die, Emperor! Die! song!!! ANGER!!!). They've got an upcoming split 10" with modern Blues legend William Whitmore.

The people who put their records and tapes out, Erika and Stewart AKA Friends Forever Records, are the best kids in the world. Every release they've put out is beautiful: hand-cut, hand-silkscreened, hand-numbered, hand-sewn, hand-folded, hand-painted...I can't think of any other label that takes the DIY aesthetic to heart as much as Erika and Stewart do. If you ever place an order with them, even if it's just for a 7" or a tape or something, you can always expect page-length (front and back) letters, candy, free hand-screened patches, etc. Great, great kids. If I ever met Erika in real life I'd hug her to death.

So yeah. Die, Emperor! Die! are awesome.

Yes, as opposed to fake Emo. There is such thing. Taking Back Sunday or The Get-Up Kids or Story of the Year or any of those ****** bands have nothing to do with Rites of Spring or Indian Summer or Mohinder. I wrote this (http://www.self-restraint.net/punkisdead/emo/historyofemo.html) over the summer of 8th grade. It's a little rough, but it explains what I mean. EDIT: I rewrote the last paragraph of this last year (or maybe it was the year before?). I just read through this again, and I seriously need to start over from scratch. But you get the idea.

Do you know the Friends Forever website? I've been looking for it for a while but haven't been able to find it.

I don't think Friends Forever can keep a website around for more than a couple months, haha. The were orignally at diyhardcore.com, but that was bought by some porn producers or something. Then they had a Tripod site, but it didn't last long. Right now they're at http://friendsforeverrecords.tk and have been for a pretty long while. They've got a distro sale going on, and you can also order the one-sided Bravo ****ing Bravo 12" (awesome Emo/Hardcore ala Embassy or Constatine Sankathi, but I hear they've changed their sound a bit and now resemble Transistor/Transistor somewhat), Wilmot Proviso 10" (rough-voiced acoustic stuff played by the most awesome semi-homeless dude west of the Mississipp') and Die, Emperor! Die! / William Whitmore 10" for $17 total. None of these are out yet, but within the next two months they will be. I'm not sure if there's going to be more than just the one Die, Emperor! Die! song on the split 10", but even if it's only "Rachel, I'm a Wretched Idealist," it will still be totally worth the price...even if the recorded version is nowhere near as good as the live one. Oh yeah, I highly suggest the acoustic cd-r and live tape of Die, Emperor! Die!; they're only three bucks each and have awesome packaging. The live tape actually sounds REALLY good.

Here are some MP3s by Die, Emperor! Die!: http://www.hxcmp3.com/bands/4144/ There's one by Burned Out Bright as well. The DED material on the site doesn't really represent them very well; the songs from the demo and split 7" with Burned Out Bright are their best stuff in my opinion...lately they've been writing longer, slower, more drawn-out songs. Kirke is also doing some stuff with vocals that is a lot more whiney/high-pitched-screamy/out-of-control than before. I won't say it's bad, but definitely not as good as the earlier stuff. If you want the demo or the song from the 7", and don't mind a 56K transfer, feel free to hit me up on AIM: klutzonbroadway. Even if you don't dig the stuff that's on the MP3 site (which is understandable...Erika and Stewart chose some of their worst stuff to make available!), you might like the demo and split 7" songs...very different from that stuff.

Normally, I'll listen to Dream Theater. With songs lasting 15 min's+ and different beat counts throughout I find that they are great to ride high-low-high, intervals with. By the end of Scenes From a Memory you will be exhausted and starving to do it again the next day.
