I found "Diamond Sea" to be the best. The rest seemed like a wash (sic).

The best version of Diamond Sea, in my opinion anyway, is on the Diamond Sea/My Arena single. It's about 26 minutes long, if I remember correctly. Quite possibly my favorite Sonic Youth track.

Tonight I'm on a bit of an Afghan Whigs kick. This cover of "How Soon Is Now?" is trippy...

Wow. Been a while since I've heard that name. Where is that track from?

Saw them back in '92 (I believe) opening up for Teenage Fanclub at The Vic and then in Boston a few years later.

Nope, never heard of it. Have you heard of Calexico?
Yeah, I've got "Feast of Wire" and the "Crystal Frontier" EP. I also have some MP3s of theirs on my computer...

And speaking of Calexico, anyone here ever listen to Giant Sand?

Yea, heard them some years back. They seemed interesting. But didn't blow my mind.

I just got home from seeing Clinic play with Ratatat. Clinic was amazing, and Ratatat was pretty decent.

As for right now, I'm listening to Loretta Lynn's new one.

Also, today is my birthday. Feel free to PayPal me some money. ;)

See that post about the concert recording from their recent show?

I wonder what the new stuff sounds like.

I think they peaked an album or two before they broke up. Can't imagine they got better again. Heard anything about the new stuff?

I've heard some of the new stuff. I need to hear it more before I can really pass judgement on it, though.

I was grooving to MC5 earlier, now it's Blind Melon as far as the eye can see.

I have friends who knew that band. Met them a coupla times. Cool guys, from what I could tell. They were supposed to have a new project after the OD. Know if it happened?

After the unfortunate demise of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon, they guys pretty much went two different ways. Chris Thorn and Brad Smith teamed up with ex Pearl Jam drummer Dave Krusen and vocalist/guitarist Christopher Shinn under the band name Unified Theory. Good stuff, if a little hard to find. Rogers Stevens went off and started the band Extra Virgin, which was thoroughly kick*ss rock with expectedly gorgeous riffs by Stevens. Definitely worth looking for, but almost impossible to find. What happened to drummer Glenn Graham I couldn't say, as I haven't heard anything about him since Hoon's death in 1995. The only current thing going on is the continued music project Abandon Jalopy by Smith and Thorn. Or at least they were working on a second album last time I heard. I'm now looking for info and am neither coming up with anything on the band or the label (Stank Face Labs) so maybe it has passed by the wayside as well.

If anyone wants to hear anything by any of those three, AIM me and I''ll send you something.

It's a Pavement kind of morning.

OK. I'm going a whole different direction today. Grooving to my birthday present, Diana Krall's latest, The Girl in the Other Room. This is the best studio stuff she has done in some time.

Danny Gatton 88 Elmira Street and Cruisin' Deuces

I saw Danny live in Eugene, Oregon in the mid-90's, a couple of years before his untimely death. These are the definitive studio albums from one on DC's best guitarists ever...and that's saying something for the city that gave us Link Wray, Bill Kirchen, Roy Buchanan, Evan Johns and others...

Word!

I was listening to Genesis, Foxtrot, a little while ago. This one's from back when Peter Gabriel fronted the band and they were prog-rock gods...long before they became a side project for Phil Collins.
