Just found this place, and I thought I'd say hello. I'm an Army Officer currently stationed at Fort Hood, TX. I'll be heading out to Fort Gordon, GA soon however.

VERY new to bicycling. Haven't really done it since I was a kid, but I did a lot of reading on it while deployed, and thought I'd start to give it a try. Picked up a 21 speed Goodwill mountain bike with Shimano gears (I know, doesn't mean much) and had the LBS tune it up. Has fairly tready (knobby?) tires on it right now, but I may get my LBS to put some smoother road tires on it. Don't know if that will make much difference, cause the hills around here are KILLING me.

I'd like to go to a one car family (me, the Wif, 1 DD, and 1 unknown on the way). But that is a slow process.

I am considering taking apart a cheap electric scooter to add an electrical assist, but that has to wait until the charger comes in so I can see if the components are worth the trouble. We'll See!

Right now not biking to work (Yay Leave!). Two HUGE hills in the middle of a 14 mile RT commute are killing my spirit, but we'll see.

Well, this was a lot longer then I thought it would be. Thanks for making your way through it. Have a good Ride!

Hi spurdy, yes, the road tyres should make it much easier to get up and down hills! But trust me, the hills get easier the more you practice :) .

We do have an e-bike forum in case you need some assistance in making up your mind about the electrical assist.

Good luck with all those things going on, and

Welcome to BF!

Thanks for the encouragement. I found the E-Bike forum, and posted a little about my project. What's sad is, this is actually pretty calm for my life! I won't get to busy for a while!!!

Welcome aboard soldier. Probably nice to be boring for a change. Look up the southeast regional forum when you get to Ft. Gordon for others in your area.

Wonderful! The e-bike forum seems to growing in leaps and bounds in popularity. I am surprised at how many members have joined in the last few months specifically for information on e-bikes.

Enjoy that non-busy time!
