Question of the Weekend

How does cycling affect your relationship with your spouse, partner or Significant Other?

THIS POLL IS PRIVATE. Your name will not appear in the poll results.

We broke up not too long ago after about 11 months. :( (Single again, yay! :))

She was supportive of my cycling, if not slightly annoyed when she would have to drive me home sometimes, or wait an extra 30 minutes for me to arrive via bicycle. She never rode with me, though. Not too much friction; her dad is/was a cyclist.

All I really want from life is a capable tandem and a cute girl to ride it with; is that really too much to ask?

My ex could never understand why I would forego spending time with him to go to sleep early.
"Getting in 50 miles before work," wasn't a good enough excuse.

So then I started dating triathletes. They never seem to need an explanation for getting up at 4am.

I love that line!

That said I voted great, SO is super, just need better weather.

One thing about triathletes... I've never met a group of people so inclined to take their clothes off in public.

Maybe I should show up at the San Diego Tri-Club meetings.

A racer dude once broke my heart, so I will never, ever involve myself with another cyclist again.

It was back in the days when I rode a beach cruiser. I always wanted to ride bikes with him but he was always "training" and said I was much too slow to ever catch up. He made fun of my Murray and called me "PeeWee"...

So we broke up. I sort of got even with him I bought a mountain bike...

I voted good, but that answer may just be temporary. My wife has a titanium road bike, it just hasn't been ridden much in the past 9 months. Maybe this summer, I'll reanswer the poll with "great".

I am too young to be tied down with somebody that doesn't share the same interests. At 25, I don't let it bother me too much, I know there is always someone out there to fit into my lifestyle.

Got a great relationship with or without cycling. But riding together only makes it that much sweeter!:D

Not in a relationship at the moment. My odds kind of sucks even without cycling, but with it it seems to be a little worse. Even saying my weekend ride time is 3-4 hrs seem to cause a lot of "bad press". I thought being active is good? I think I have to say I either exercise an hour a week or nothing at all. I guess meeting someone new, but with a new (loose'y) connection that I'm unwilling to change my weekend cycling plans doesn't improve the situation either. :p

I need to learn how to swim and join the tri club. :D

I shy away from triathletes because they make me run! No running please!!!

That said, I absolutely love teh bf even if he doesn't bike because he's totally understanding about me coming over all sweaty and flushed because I hammered up the hill to get to his place. Plus he also doesn't mind me biking circles around him when we "jog" together.

BTW, it's our anniversary today!! Yay! :D

You just have to find the right woman dude! EW, I hate prissy women! Trick is to find one that is femine but yet still on the active side. You ought to see Gina throw a softball and pound a racquetball. Now that is one fine woman!:p

I voted OK.

When work conflicts with riding events that I'd like to do, she always covers for me so that's cool.
But she doesn't understand why I keep so many bikes. I've tried explaining the differences and uses among some of my my road, mountain, tour, and fixed bikes.

She has no idea that I pose.

Mr and Mrs Beanz are a great couple to ride with :)

I'm really lucky, my Wife the Pocket Monkey loves to Ride and She never complains when I go riding alone or with Friends...

She also watches the Cycling with me on TV, She know's all the top Rider's names, I would say Her fave is Hincapie and Leipheimer although now Cipollini is back with RR She kinda has a proclivity towards Him again for some unknown reason...:o

I don't know what Women see in Tall, Dark, Handsome Superstars :(

Yeah, SDBC is not really a good place to pick up the babes, given that it seems to be about 90% male. I bet if you participated in some of the other (social) bike club rides, there would be a better female to male ratio. And you could do it on a fixed gear, or a 45 lb mountain bike, to keep it interesting. Either that or take up ice skating or tap dancing, if you really want to find a sport with more women. :p

I've definitely dated women who didn't want me to spend 6 - 7 hours on a ride when I "could be with her." Never a major conflict, but definitely a source of friction on both sides.

My wife runs and I cycle. I am blessed to have a wife that is active and is very supportive of my cycling passion.

I get most of my miles in commuting during the week. I usually do one big ride on Saturday and spend Sunday off the bike with the kids and wifie.

My first thought on seeing this poll was, "what's a relationship?"

Dave, I know the feeling. I've been divorced for 6 years and haven't dated once. For one, I'm not looking...I spend my time doing something that, to me, is more important, raising my 11 year old daughter. So between softball and soccer (I ref also) for her and my riding, the only women I meet are the mothers of her team mates and they're all married. Maybe when she's 13 or 14 and starts to really ignore me I'll begin to look around a little and see what's out there.

Either that or take up ice skating or tap dancing, if you really want to find a sport with more women.

I'm not sure about tap dancing, but when I used to be a rink rat and play some ice hockey, the rink was a very target rich enviroment.:D

As an adult (I'm not sure you are one, but I'm guessing), you can choose to ignore any and all polls. Actually, you could choose to ignore all threads and So Cal in general and go join a forum where you feel the people participating aren't so lame. But the negative, sourpuss act is getting old, and we all know what your handle use to be. Too bad when you changed handles, you didn't change your attitude and come back a tiny bit friendly.

I was talking about that today, Ralph - how there seems to be a certain group of folks who just don't like the group here and really for no real reason. Who cares if someone puts up a Poll? I believe this guy (who's complaining in here) put up a poll the other day on mountain bike trails. I don't know any of the trails, but I didn't jump in and write "stupid poll, doesn't even apply to So Cal, etc."

But that's not my style or interest. If I didn't like it here, I'd just take a hike. :D

Hey ME,
This is the only forum I hang out at and even that's not that often, but I do check in a few times a day, every day, and there are plenty of threads posted that I don't even bother looking at because from the title I don't imagine that I'll care one way or another what's said on the subject. But that doesn't mean I've got to jump in and piss everyone off just because I'm bored or something. Now there are times when something pushes my hot buttons, (like when someone injects politics into an otherwise non political discussion) then I can't control myself:o...kind of like when someone talks about riding helmet less with you:D Some people are instigators and that's the only thing they know how to do unfortunately.

Ok, I took my bike down, now to get dressed and ride!!! First time on the bike in over a month.

:( Sorry to hear WP. I never can keep a man past a few months, so I've never had to worry about it one way or another, but I have friends who have issues. It's a hard one. Does he ride at all? CRAP, IT'S RAINING HERE!!! I went downstairs to my truck to get my helmet (it's been so long I didn't know where it was :o) and it's raining, and I had just checked the weather report and it says no rain until tonight. This really sucks, it's been so long and I don't know about you but after a long time off of the bike it takes some real prodding of myself to get out there again. So after finally deciding to go, now I can't (just had lasik and don't want mud and carp in my brand new eyes).

Sorry to hear that, Wolfpack. :( I've given up trying to talk to family/friends who have no interest in cycling, unless they ask. I took some tips from a Fat Cyclist article a few years ago:

Hmmm...well, um....yes, actually. :o Most of them, anyway. There are some single ones, but honestly, most in the range of 35-50 are married or have girlfriends. But I understand the desire to have a mate who participates. I'm not sure I could date a non-cyclist. I've had friends cluck their tongues at that, but riding is such a huge part of my life, it would be difficult to spend hours on a bike without that person there too. I hope to meet a man who rides, of course, if I ever meet one that's single, gels with my over-the-top personality, has a great sense of humor, is kind and wants to have an LT relationship. So many variables...sigh.

Okay, changed my mind...I'll settle for one who's single and rides a bike. The rest can be negotiated. :p
