Someone jumped early - took off. No one wanted to work to catch him. You want to know why? He was a real, real big guy. No one thought he would stay out. HE DID!!! He dug deep. Real deep and stayed away. (not a real hilly course). Big ups to him. I talked to him later and he said that he has lost over 100 pounds and still working on it. He deserved it.
Anyway. I stayed in the pack. Looked for guys I thought would charge off the front. No one was strong enough. Except Big 'un. I should have. But I have to race tomorrow and the following 2 weekends. I want to play it safe so I can Cat up by the end of March.
So, last lap. Guys are battling in the front. I find myself up front too much. I slowed and got back in the pack - never going below 5th place. We hit the RR tracks, a few seconds pass, and I hear a crash behind me. Don't know what happened. The group started ramping it up. I was moving up and to the outside to sprint. But by this time we are at the 200m mark most of us are maxxed out. I'm hurting, but stand up anyway to sprint, and two of go for it. He's ahead pretty good. I couldn't dig deep enough to catch - but just enough to hold off everyone else.

It was greenville, but I can't remember. That might have been him.

Great job! I don't know if it is still this way, but it used to be with 3 top 3's you could upgrade to 4. I did that... but 4 racing is pretty sketchy too so then you will want to get into the 3's. When you do, stay there. 1/2 racing is too damn hard to be fun! LOL
I saw that big guy and all I could think was: "man I would love to draft him" It can suck sometimes being bigger than most (because smaller guys can draft you well, but you can't draft them)... but he is pretty much going to be bigger than all. There are a lot of us in the 6'4"-6'5" 200lb range, but I would guess he was more around 6'7" and ~ 275lbs... when he gets down to 210lbs he could be a real badass.
When he went instead of thinking "oh he won't last", you should have thought: "Sweet! Race legal motorpacing"

Very nice.
As a "race legal motor" myself - I can vouch for the fact that big guys make a good draft. Cavalão is an even better draft than I am :D

No kidding. I'm not a bad draft, either- but I don't compare to Snuff or Cavalao.
 to a fellow clyde showing people that we can race like the small guys.

The guy had guts and heart. He knew what he had to do and stuck with it regardless. I talked to him a bit and told him how great I thought it was. He was very proud of himself. I was proud of him too.
I hope the best for him. If he does keep losing weight, I dare to think what he could do.
This is what makes bike racing so awesome (yeah, I grew up in the 80s).

Dude's name is Ben, real nice guy. I spent half of last cross season trying to catch him. Last weekend he killed the IVs at the tundra time trial.

Congrats! It sounds like a fun race. And a big thumbs-up to the big guy; he's giving you a run for your money already, and it's only February.
Hi,
Nice way to start the year. Hopefully I can place at least once this year. :o

My name is Scott, I ride for Atlanta Pro bikes and I am large (6'4/275). I know Ben and he is tiny compared to me, I got forth at the Tundra TT, first time in Aero bars... I lost 3'rd by half a second!

On sunday, I pulled the pack around the BWM test track for the entire race but my hands went numb at the end so I sat out for the sprint... I was a marked man anyway so I'd got no "break" during that one. I had a great time at the races.

Scott, you aren't supposed to pull the pack around for the entire race. It just keeps them fresh while you are spent.
Good job in the 5s at Tundra.

If you have the strength to pull the pack, then attack and get off the front :p

Hey man, good to hear from you. You did an awesome job Saturday. If you race this weekend, don't look for me. I upgraded to cat 4 (just so you won't beat me anymore ;) ).
I have a few pics of you at the BMW - this one was the best:

Thanks for the pic! I will be at the GA cup this weekend and hope to do well in the 4/5 field, I hear it's flat!
I did a write-up for the teams blog that I posted on this intro thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=392445) hope you enjoy it and I'll be seeing you in the four race after I cat up (after the Ga cup).

JoshFrank, Cx Ben if you are talking about 3's in NC is tall but while 6'5" he is only like 160lbs... scary on the climbs and strong on the flats too.
Big Scott, I was thinking of another guy too. There was a guy there very tall with a bigger build, I assumed they were talking about him. But man, when you get down to 200lbs you will also be a real badass!
