Anyone in here ride one fixed gear?
Im dying to have one of these. Of course the price tag is damned daunting.
Are they worth it?
If you have one id like to hear your impressions of it and see a pic if you got it.

:)

Someone in the MTB forum has a Pugsley. Don't remember the drivetrain but they went full out with the wide rims and huge tires. Seeing it all assembled really is a jaw dropped. I would love to have one as well.

Scroll down, there is a SS one: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=168605&highlight=pugsley

I think fixed would be cool, but you would want a really low gear. Honestly I think I would run it 1x8 speed with a friction shifter or something else bomb proof for the rear derailleur

This one is cool to. Fully geared out, disc brakes the works but he goes in depth on how well it does in the snow: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=378983&highlight=pugsley

They are wicked fun, especially in snow. I don't have one but definitely have thought about buying one.

I think I saw on sheldon's site that they built one with a geared setup in back, and a fixed cog on the front wheel since they use the same spacing I guess, I dunno, but it's def a bike on my wish list.

if i was getting a pugsly, i would most certainly have it fixed gear. the whole appeal (to me) is the fact that it can go anywhere and can handle any situation, i.e. long backcounty rides where you definitely wouldnt want to break something. why compromise the durability by putting dérailleurs on?

why compromise the durability by putting dérailleurs on?
Because you can have a backup (up to 4 drivetrain options if you ran 2 flipflops) If you are anywhere with hills, why not have a derailleur on there if you can always swap the front and back wheels and have a fixed gear if something breaks? If riding up hills in the same gear that you descend with is sometimes challenging on the road, then why would you look to do it in the mud/snow?

I assume because it's a 29er effectively with those wheels and it is heavy I would want some gear choice.

What about an shimano nexus or other then?

Id take a RD + cassette over a internally geared hub for the kind of riding a pugsely would be doing. If the RD breaks you can still be up and running as a SS in a couple of minutes.

how "light" could one of these things get built up? the SB one says 37 pounds, and that's with discs and cassettes+ shifters. what if you went singlespeed or fixed, canti brakes, and maybe some other ridiculous stuff?
here's the SB one:
http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/surly-pugsley/images/surly-pugsley1.jpg

edit:

18" = 5.66 lb (2.57 kg)
Fork - uncut = 2.52 lb (1.14 kg) uncut

I don't think weight is an issue with this puppy. I wouldn't want canti's on it either, its effectively a 29er built for deep sand / snow so you are going to want brakes that can handle weather better. If I SS one, disc up front, nothing in back if weight was an issue?

I love these theoretical whacky builds.

One of the things I notice in looking through all the bike photos on website like this is the incredible sameness of most of the bikes. The really neat thing to me about the Pugsley is the appearance. I'd like to have one, but wouldn't ever even have it offroad- would be awesome just riding it down the bike trail.

you are the kind of person that makes my head spin when i go to work and have to work on crazy franken bikes. although it would be ultimate. bob trailer might be better. im pretty sure the big dumby cant fit 4 inch tires, nor can the xtracycle.

I know it doesn't currently work, but that doesn't mean that a guy can't dream. And I'll take the head spinning as a compliment ;)

so you'd get it just to be different, not to use it as its intended? unintentional irony detected

One of the guys on my team has been riding a friend of his' pugsley. Commuting through the icy death up here in ND.

Hes running it single or fixed (can't remember exactly but its setup for both) Its a neato bike. Weighs about 40lbs, rollin on 4's.

Said basically... he has the gearing set pretty low to keep a good cadence while going over deep snow. Floats real nice if you keep the psi's down. If he stops pedaling though.... it gets eaten right up and it sucks buckets to try and dig a bike like that out.

But that bike is hustler for sure.

God I want one.

Winter sucks in Toronto on a regular bike. I want to plow through feet of slush and snow in this thing. Spikes for the skating rink that always follows. Pedaling like a juggernaut past motorists spinning their wheels in futility trying to escape their prison/parking spot.

Muahahahaha! Ha!

Where do you live in ND? I grew up up there. That thing would be pure sweet hell on the Maah dah hey in the winter.

Have you seen this? This guy had a surly single speed hub for a backup incase his 2 x 8 failed.

Someone in the MTB forum has a Pugsley.

I have one. Commuted on it 18 miles each way for about six months as New Orleans was recovering from Hurricane Katrina when roads were beaten up by heavy equipment and flat tires/broken wheels were a huge issue esp riding at night. So I used the Pugs all winter.

http://12.152.111.66/joeybike/pugs.001.jpg

I also use it to play in sand at the beach and a few other spots around S. Louisiana. I have ridden off road single track with some more experienced buds and did fine too.

My setup new would cost around $2500. Tried to sell it on Ebay all winter (I moved back to flooded/remodeled house last Sept and have an easier commute) without success for $1500.

The major drawback (for me) riding that thing around town is the attention. I absolutely HATE talking to every stranger on the street about those freakin' tires. And in New Orleans, the odds of having some hoodlum knock my brains out to get such a thing is pretty high. I don't get to the beach enuf to justify having it. Bummer, because I really love that bike - on and off road.

If you love talking to strangers - 99 percent men - then you would love riding one of these around town! I suspect that if a woman with large breasts wore a bikini top around downtown that she would get similar attention. But put her on a Pugsley TOO! Mens heads would explode form sensory overload!

Just get a Big Dummy. Big Apples fit on it and you even get a Brooks with it.

I am all about the Big Dummy. It's too bad that the Xtracycle accessory and the Big Dummy frame come out to over $1000. Is that a Rohloff on the Riding The Spine dude's bike? I've never seen them mention that.

"so you'd get it just to be different, not to use it as its intended? unintentional irony detected "

Not exactly. I'd get it because it was cool, and it's cool partly because it's different.

If, on the other hand, it had tires 1/8" thick, it would be different, too, but wouldn't be cool, at least to me.
