Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This is going to expose me for the GIGANTIC nerd I am, but hey...that's cool. I've been waiting all day to look at my data in cycling peaks, and post the results of today's workout :D

As anyone who bothers to pay attention to the crap I post knows, I just had knee surgery on the 29th of January. However, as this wasn't a surgery that required me to protect any grafts, I had the surgeon's permission to ride outside as of yesterday.

Permission in hand, out I went with the intent of doing 2, max 3 hours with some low end SST (70-80%). The weather was perfect, 50* and overcast at starting, and rising to 60* with beautiful skies near the end. After a quick warmup, I looked down to see myself climbing the first grade at around 380 watts - well, well...I decided to try to hold a hard tempo for 20 minutes, then chill out. I made it to twenty minutes and felt like Godzilla on smack. Thirty minutes it was. At thirty minutes I felt like the love child of Conan the Barbarian and Godzilla - on smack and EPO. F*&k it, I decided to try to hang on for 60 minutes. Hang on I did...

So what does Monod think my FTP is now? - All of the peak values were obtained on today's ride, with no specific focus on maxing out the efforts for the durations

So, enough of the graph nonsense - suffice it to say, I feel stellar. I'm made a nearly complete recovery of my pre surgery power, and through what I like to think was a "smart" use of the post-op downtime (reading/re-reading and applying Friel's and Coggan/Allen's books) know I've got a lot more in the tank.

The ride above, in and of itself would be at least personally note worthy, but it didn't end there. As I rolled down from a favorite local hill, I saw the club from Southern Pines was getting their Saturday ride together. Well heck, I'm only ~75 minutes from home, might as well get another 2-3 hours in :D The ride was really slow Z1/Z2 for more than the first hour, but as folks got warmed up fun was had. The most impressive part was a 12 year old kid who couldn't weigh more than 90lbs soaking wet who climbed like a scalded cat. We started with a group of ~20, and on the final hills I was hitting 500+ sustained watts near the crests, and this little guy, his dad and two, and then one other guys were left. Amazing. That's talent.

As for me - talent or no, I just like to ride my bike, and as I hammered out the closing 90 minutes of my ride in the waning sunlight past farms and forests on a crisp early spring day, trying to beat twilight back to my car, it was clear that days like today are the reason I ride.

Total ride stats:

F*#king doper!:p

That is great man. Soon you will be back racing... I am willing to bet your PE supercomputer is out of whack after riding on the trainer for so long... so your first ride outside at hard effort had a fun factor to squelch/buffer those pain signals. Lots of structured trainer intervals boost your fitness and make riding outside seem like a cake walk.

There is probably an element of truth to the fun outweighing the pain. Towards the end of the ride, I interpreted a feeling that would normally tell me to slow down, as my legs filled up with lactic acid as "hey, that feels warm and tingly- cool" and went harder :D

Yes, I think that's pretty clear by now. I'm cool with it though :D

I don't know what those graphs mean, but congrats on a breakthrough ride nonetheless. Why do I get the feeling you would have had the same ride without the Power Meter?

I put my PM back on the Cdale today, I'll be boring you with this crap soon enough.

Slow Fred can't help himself (glad someone caught that :D ). I'm going to take it easy when my body tells me to though...after all rides like today aren't what make you fast, proper application of naptime and snackies do.

PCaddy: I don't think I would have had the same ride sans power meter. When I first determined my FTP it was 275. At my best between knee BS I've had it up to 335. Currently I think 320 is a fair estimate...the PM forces me to concentrate and maintain an output - and then allows me to dissect my performance to come back Harder, Better, Faster Stronger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bl6RJyZdBSU) <-clicky

transplant: Rest is training...going to have to remind myself of that tomorrow so I'm not tempted to dig a big hole riding again.
