Recumbent - Bent for my Grandfather?

Hi everybody. I am trying to find some kind of bike/bent for my Grandfather. He is in his 70s, has had both knees replaced and is 300+ lbs. He has tried riding a regular bike, but his balance isn't great and he can't really step over the top tube anyway. I have tried to get him to try a trike, but he is too proud for that.
I was wondering if he maybe some type of bent would work, but most of them seem too hard to balance or are too low. He wouldn't be able to get up off of something low. Is there anything with 3 wheels that isn't low and doesn't look like a normal trike? Any other ideas? Thanks.

It's a Sun EZ-3 AX (http://www.sunbicycles.com/sun/index.html), and it's pretty easy to get on and off. Those are 20" tires, so you can estimate the height of the seat. I don't know what its weight limit for the rider is.

When a lot of non-bicycle people think of a trike, they think of the "granny" upright-bike-conversion kinds, that are very tall and not-real-stable in turns. Recumbent trikes sit lower, are more stable and more comfortable.
The Sun delta trike is only around $800 I think (for the cheapest model), it's the first one you'd want to look at. I think the stated weight limit is 250 lbs, but if he's gentle over bumps it would be okay.
Beyond that there's not a whole lot; most trikes available are tadpoles that sit low. The tadpole that Sun makes is hither, but also is rather heavy and costs quite a bit more than the delta.
Lightfoot makes recumbent bikes and trikes, even custom versions (tall/heavy) but they aren't cheap, starting up near $3K. I don't have any balance or mobility issues and I'd like to try a Roadrunner trike, except that if I liked it and wanted to buy one,,,,, I've got nowhere to store it.

Cycle Genius has their "Phoenix Mobility Extender" with a seat height of 21.5", although it may look a little too much like a wheelchair for your grandfather's taste. It's actually on sale right now for $1600, normally it's $2000. I got a Sun EZ-Tad SX; it's rated for 300 lbs and is listed as having a seat height of 18". I've got bad knees (surgery coming up soon on one of them) plus weigh somewhat over that 300lb limit. I don't have any trouble getting off of it, and it feels more than sturdy enough to me (my LBS owner told me that the frame would be more than sturdy enough, and if the wheels don't hold up, he'll build stronger wheels). At least nobody will mistake it for either a wheelchair or a granny trike!

Thanks all. This will give me a good start at what to start researching.
