Hi all from Toronto,
Not only am I new to this forum, but kinda new to cycling. I haven't rode a bike for 12 yrs when I was still in elementry school. I'm starting to pickup cycling yesterday for fitness/pastime. I'm currently starting off with a Specialized Crosstrail Sport (all i could really afford). Hopefully I'll upgrade some components later on when I understand more about cycling.
I have one question though, I took a glimpse at the Ontario HTA, and was wondering how strict cops are? I live uptown in Scarborough/Markham area, and I always see casual cyclist on the sidewalk, without helmets, etc.

Hi - good for you firstly!
Police aren't super strict from my experience, but there again I'm usually always following the rules/law. I guess it would depend how you plan on riding and how bored your local division / regional police are at the time.

Unless you have to, I'd stay off the sidewalk. Always wear a helmet, don't follow the fools without one as it will save your life and has mine on two occassions (I have the broken helmets to prove it)
I recently got a $110 ticket (traffic cops love me), for riding through a stop sign downtown. I suggest you either obey the laws, or make sure there are no traffic cops around.
Enjoy the ride, your off to a good start.

hi fellas im from toronto, yonge and lawrence area.
im in high school and i've been looking for people to ride with, but my friends don't ride and all these clubs like the tbn are all for adults. kinda frustrating
Good to see the Don Valley trail south of Queen is open again with some improvements, but some parts of the trail still need a lot of help - sections are narrow with bad sight lines, overgrown vegetation, flooded sections, mud and silt deposited from river flooding, teeth-jarring bumps... Hope the improvements continue!

Hey airosen
Yeah I've been wondering myself about the demographics of cycling clubs... don't seem to have many ppl my age... im 24 but just graduated from university and high school feels like yesterday.... i think it takes longer to get "old" these days.
I enjoy cycling alone, but at the same time its funner in a group, ive tagged along once with some randoms. I think i'll still give a try to one of the clubs next year, maybe the newmarket eagles, i'm sure the seniors have a thing or 2 to teach us.
I'm from richmond hill so i cycle here in the area, 30 min north and the traffic dies, so it's pretty good, except there is no twisty roads (or i just dont know them) so its mostly long straight roads with hills.

Note that helmets are not required for adults. Reading posts in various forums, it seems the cops are stricter downtown and by Lake Ontario. Other than there, I have not heard of anyone getting a ticket for riding on the sidewalk or without a bell.

It's my turn. I live in Scarborough at Midland/Steeles, one block east of Kennedy. It's hard to find other roadies there. They're usually downtown, up north or to the west. I usually do a 35km ride a few times a week to Rouge Valley, along McNicol which is a bicycle friendly road. I've been riding for about 3 months. I'm 25 so I'd say I can still improve a bit. Give me a shout if you live near the area or don't mind going there (unfortunately I don't have a car). Thanks!

I'm a uni, student and i've been in the same situation when I was in high school. The TBN guys are a good bunch, but it's tough to find other riders in the same age bracket as you.

Hello,
I’m a 19 year old male, who just finished a first year at University of Toronto. I live around Yonge and Eglinton in Toronto. I’ve been riding a Trek 1000 for the past 3 years and got about 15,000 kilometers on it. I recently got a Specialized Tarmac but unfortunately I didn’t have time to ride it as much as I wanted. The best ride on the specialized so far has been a trip from Toronto to Hamilton and back, about a week ago.
I’d love to find somebody else I can ride with. I can accommodate your speed if it is lower them mine, and I will try to keep up if your pushing out 400 watts, :>
As for trip lengths… I’m up for anything from 20 k to even multi day trips with hundredths of kilometers.

What's wrong with socializing with people who are not your age? In school you're herded around in groups of kids born in the same year as you were; in real life you have to learn to deal with people who are older and younger.
Please note that not all adults are the same age. ;) All of these people you identify as 'older than you' are a mixed bag themselves, probably ranging from their 30s to ... as old as they can get and still be able to ride a bike.
