I have a hardtail mountain bike. I have no idea what exactly it is built for (what I can and cant do on it)

I havnt gone on a mountain trail yet, I just take it to and from university.

today I stopped in an abandoned parking lot and started trying to do jumps. I managed to kind of lift the front wheel by pulling up on the handel bars and by convulsing my body.

I have these pedals that have "stirrups" or something on them, so it is a bit easier to jump up with my legs.

presumably, I will use this technique to get over roots and such right?

I was using it to get onto curbs ond over speedbumps in the parking lot.

is there a guide that breaks down techniques, says what they are used for, the best way to do them etc?

peace,

Sebastian

Step by step on what I do...

1. Crouch foward like you are about to sprint an uphil climb.

2. Throw weight backwards, keep arms bent and pull front wheel up. The higher the better.

3. Push bars foward (not down, but out) and at the same time push your feet backwards (like a donkey kick) and try to kick yourself in the butt.

4. Put it all together in a smooth motion and you've got it down :)

If you have a FS, do the same thing, but when you crouch, load the suspension and use it to help you. I can hop my 44 pound FS bike higher than most guy's on HT's.
