Southern California - I Need A Threaded Fork Threaded ! Or Cut Or Help!!!

hi guise... so i have a bike with a threaded fork that i need replaced.... i got the steer tube and thread measurements but im having a P.I.T.A time finding someone in the southbay or LA that is willing to cut a threaded fork to size or thread a fork for me....

any one out there can point me in the right direction? and no i do not wish to go threadless... thank you :D

well actually.. im planning on purchasing a longer steer tube... cutting it down to the right size then threading that....

Lets see if I can interprete into English:

You have an existing bike frame and you want to replace the fork. The "new" fork (and steerer tube, because ya can't have one without the other) is too long. You are trying to find someone that can cut the fork's steerer tube to the proper length. You may also have to "cut" more threads because AFTER the steertube is cut, the threads may not extend far enough towards the crown to properly secure the headset.

Is this what you want to acheive?

I tried to do that last year, and I couldn't find a shop that was willing to thread a steerer without existing threads already on it. Apparently, aligning the dye is hard to do on an unthreaded pipe, but easy to get started on existing threads. In that respects, you'd have an easier time finding a fork that comes close to your desired specs and having a good shop extend the threads then cut it down.

The only way I could accomplish my task was to find a fork on ebay with about the right specs, and that meant being flexible on color (I was looking for a steel fork at the time). What are the specs you're looking for?

If you can find a shop that's willing to take the job, the long steerer tube should already have factory threading and the shop guy can extend that threading possibly another few centimeters. Then cut the steerer to the desired length after the threads have been extended.
You'll have a hard time finding someone to thread a virgin, unthreaded steerer.

^ few being the key word. The shop I tried didn't want to extend it the 2-3 inches I needed, explaining that it would possibly wear the dye right out with that much use.

yea.. hmm .. for some reason i always thought it would be easiest to get a fork super long as hell... and just cut it to length clean.. then start some fresh new threads....

but i do see existing.. but then cutting it down wouldnt that mess up the threads?


PS.. urban... that hoop with the 1 missing spoke came in.... and i got that extra hub ...
also thanks for all the help guys... but i found a shop i think ORANGE 20 BIKES in DOWNTOWN la does it.. and also JONES BICYCLES in LONG BEACH..

both charge about $40 to get it done.. and then if you need to REAM and FACE the steertube to fit any headset.. then thats a slight extra charge.. i think chris kings are 26.4 / JIS = 27.0 etc....

I got a little extra pay last month and bought a different frame. I'm hoping to sell my current frame for enough to buy some parts to build a decent set of tubulars for racing!

B&H on Mission near FairOaks in So Pasadena charged me $10 to extend the threads like about an inch. I did the cutting of the steerer tube myself with a chop saw. This was like 5 years ago.

Bill Ron Bikes in Redondo Beach on Torrance Blvd. has all the expertise and tools you'll ever need. Plus he is local. But its only him at the shop, you'll probably need to schedule that repair.

I've only had to do this once (a long time ago at that), but the important thing is to have the additional threads cut first, then cut it down to length.

If you cut it first, a burr could get into the die, and completely ruin the fork.

So check to make sure that they put enough threads on it to allow your headset to seat correctly before cutting it. I made the mistake of cutting first, only to find out they didn't thread it enough.
