I was appalled to see a Commercial, by of all people A.O.L.

Pushing their Broadband sale, as depicting a group of road cyclists When right through the middle of them roars a speeding Motorbike, with the voice over stating why hang about when you can do it 10 times faster.

How do these people get away with such an appaling tv advert.

I don`t know if this same commercial is viewable in other parts of the world or only in the U.K. But it seems a highly dangerous suggestion to show what is tantamout to aggresive intention and should be withdrawn imediately.....

I have never seen it here in U.S. Now, the bike went right through the pack or long the side?

They should have used a cyclist zipping by a pack of joggers instead......

Even more disturbing, I saw a McDonald's ad yesterday where a cyclist is riding in a city with NO HANDS on the bar... why? Because he was too busy drolling over the egg mcmuffin (or whatever) he was about to stuff into his face. Advertisers will try anything if they think it looks cool, and then stick a disclaimer at the bottom. Remember the SUV ad where some macho SUV drivin' guys (is there any other type in adland?) were out in the woods and some bears stole their food? And then the macho SUV guys attacked the bears to get their quiche lorraine or whatever back? At the bottom of the screen, in small print, it said "do not attempt."

Ah, the sweet collision of law and advertising.

As opposed to all the other apalling tv adverts? Once you accept that all marketing is the work of Satan you cease to be surprised by whatever is spewed out on the screen, and can learn to ignore it, which is the best response to these things. Drawing attention to it is playing right into their hands.

What about the recent Gap commercial where a young woman all decked out in Gap duds rides down a busy street. She not only lacks a helmet, but she's also wearing a scarf that looks about 10 feet long and it's flying out behind her waiting to get caught in the spokes of her bike. Not too mention that while this is going on she's gazing BACKWARD as she rides through traffic (she must have missed the mall). Makes me cringe every time I see it. I guess the philosophy is it's not how long you live, it's how fashionable you look that matters.

Pure wisdom.

Wow, you guys take things too literally. All of these comercials are in a controled environment, and are made to show a simple message.

The AOL comercial, to show that by using their broadband you can get faster internet service. The commercial utilizes, many people on two wheels, and now with the new broadband you now get faster service on two wheels. Not that the motorcyclist is trying to run the cyclists over or off the road.

The Mcdonald's commercial is just the fact that that person is talented enough to ride with no hands in a controlled environment and eat at the same time.

I had a big problem with this commercial too! A really good looking woman on a nice bike! Plus they showed her from several angles! Did I mention she was really good looking!? Ok, maybe I didn't have a problem with this commercial, I just have a problem. But, she was realllly good looking.

Agreed, these things are best ignored. I honestly can't remember the last television commercial I actually saw.

OTOH, if AOL want to have a commercial filming a slim, spanky cyclist zipping through a school holiday traffic jam using the same slogan, I'm their man! :D

AOL recently threw a free concert here due to an ad they ran in New York stating that Boise wasn't ready for AOL Broadband. I would be happy if AOL were to take a hike. There's nothing more I hate than to try to fix someone's computer who's using AOL. Their software ends up causing all sorts of problems with the OS.

Oh well, I guess their ads are working if they cause you to remember the message. :p

That may not be what the commercials show to you, but there are an awful lot of stupid people out there who will interpret them differently.

I think the Gap ad was more beneficial to the image of cycling than not. And she was really good looking..

As well as the disreputable AOL one, we have one where The Grim Reaper takes a holiday, and a cyclist actually survives riding his bike. He falls off a clif and gets run over, then gets struck by lightening (as you do), yet manages to survive because Death is having a swift pint in the pub.

Simple solution to the problem, don't watch TV, I can't stand all the crap they put on TV, wouldn't really care if I ever had a TV anymore, except to watch the odd video.

My apologies, but please check the posting date. I posted that a week ago, just before I made a similar amendment to my own ignore list.

O.K. she's a hot chick. But nice b....or not, she's not gonna look so good under the wheels of the bus that's gonna run her over as a result of her riding habits!

I'm usually pretty cynical, and have a low tolerance for irresponsibility, but you know, even I have a hard time expecting valid role models for proper cycling technique from a fashion ad.

Ditto. I'm not expecting it...just can't help taking the opportunity to bash it while I can!

That gap ad drives me nuts too- like there aren't enough idiots on bikes who actually DO that stuff? Now they'll think it's cute and fun!

Once a few years ago one of the beer companies ran an ad, obviously aimed at the young kids- 18-early 20s. It showed a bunch of kids in swimsuits, all joining hands and jumping off a cliff into the ocean to go swimming. I thought it looked incredibly dangerous, and I thought great! Encourage kids to drink beer and jump or dive off cliffs! They don't think kids will do that? Duhh... kids that age have died or killed people trying to imitate movie stunts! I think they got complaints because I never saw that ad again.
