I saw Shawn Colvin and John Hiatt a few months back. What a concert. I work with 30 to early 40-somethings, and none of them ever heard of John Hiatt.
Who are your favorite singers/songwriters?

Joni Mitchell . . . no one else even comes close. Have loved Joan since about '67. Still do! Had 2nd row seats for one of her concerts (back in the Court and Spark days); will never forget that evening/night! She's 62 now and still at it.

Herbie Hancock's interpretation of her songs just got the Grammy for Album of the Year. Hard to beat that.

Colvin and Hiatt would be an excellent show. I've liked both for years. Joni Mitchell is great too.

Hit em with this guy Jorma Kaukonen. Remember a little group named Jefferson Airplane. How about Hot Tuna? On his later stuff he has gone back to mostly country blues and old timey style finger picking stuff. Catch his Blue Country Heart album if you like that kind os stuff. Killer guitar player

+1 on Joni and Jorma (esp. Blue Country Heart)
I'll add John Prine -- but there are so many other great ones out there...
Kind of surprised that nobody has mentioned that Dylan guy.
Leonard Cohen and Tom Russell. But maybe that just shows my attraction for the Dark Side...
"Who are your favorite singers/songwriters?"
Jim Gill is just bursting with talent. But more importantly he is my good friend and a nice guy.

Not to put too fine a point on it but that would be Steve Earle
I only point that out because he's pretty much automatic for me: I see a new Steve Earle CD, I buy it. Simple... no thought involved.
Bruce has just hasn't done it for me beyond his Born to Run... The River... Born in the USA" period. Still a wonderful song writer but he's lost his edge, I DO really like his Seeger Sessions CD though.
I put Blue Country Heart in my CD player when it came out and it stayed there for the nest 4 months.
To be fair, Jorma didn't write any of the songs.
Beyond that, I like an awful lot of people but the ones I really favor are the ones with the courage and cojones to follow their muse, popularity be damned. Neil Young, Joni (Court and Spark through Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. I still -this many years on- have a tough time with her Mingus LP... and I *LOVE* Mingus), Dylan at various times throughout his career but particular over the past 4 or 5 years.
I too know there are more but that's a start...

I like a lot of singers & groups, but if I had to name a favorite, it would still have to be Bob Dylan. I have 30-something Dylan CDs and they always remain in my playlist, whilst others come and go. I particularly love listening to Dylan when I'm driving. I've been known to drive for 6-8 hours listening to only Dylan. I've been listening to Bob for over 40 years now and I'm not about to stop anytime soon ... unless I kick the bucket.

Yep. I know that. Whoops. Can I redeem myself by mentioning some of the early Stacy Earle? I like her a lot but wish she's stop performing with her husband, whose music does nothing for me.

I've been listening to a lot of Tim Hardin lately...and Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen.
The music of the sixties will never be surpassed, in my opinion...not that I wouldn't LOVE to see a better musical decade come along.

I am not a fan of "Modern" music- and back in the 60's when my music interests' started- The American Blues was just coming to the UK (Put that as early 60's) Chuck Berry was the first commercial "Rhythm and Blues" singer to make it here- But I got onto a lot of early stuff from Leadbelly and John Lee Hooker. I know there were a lot of others that interested me but J L H has still got me. So much so that half of my I-Pod is filled with his music. Intersperse that with Status Quo- and you basically have my Music Interests. Except for Classical- and Big Band- and a lot of the Mersey Sound and then there was the Military music ( Only Played by the band of the Royal Marines though) and Then there might be a bit of Kate Moss and a lot of Country music.
But who is Shawn Colvin?

Jennifer Warnes
And someone earlier mentioned Leonard Cohen.
The album where Warnes sang Cohen songs, "Famous Blue Raincoat" is incredible. The audio quality is stunning. Listening to it on a high-end audio system is almost a religious experience. It was a big favorite demo CD at audiophile shows for a few years back in the 90s. It remains one of my 5 favorite CDs to show off my audio system.

Shawn Colvin is or at least was an avid tri-athlete, which means that she cycles some. I bet she lurks here under a nom de CRT.
Not sure who any of the artists/writers are but I could listen to about anything originating from the late 60's through the mid to late 70's.......Would probably second the approval of Neil Young as well.

Shawn Colvin is the best! I love her stuff.Cover Girl, which is all her favorite songs by other people is Killer!
I just did a gig a few weeks ago in St. James city Fl.( I'm a bass player/singer)It's kind of out in the middle of nowhere, but a very cool place. We had a great acoustic guitarist from down here, and a some music teacher from Missouri on electric violin. We were playing cover tunes, and improvising all over them, and all I could think of was Hot Tuna!!!

Anyone listen to Jude Johnstone? I like her a lot. She writes some really nice songs that I don't get tired of (and that's a good test.)
I'll always love Karla Bonoff. Get past her covers by Linda Ronstadt (and Aaron Neville) and there's quite a library of wonderful stuff. One of her albums sucked though - "Wild Hearts of the Young". I could never get into it. I like all the rest, including the stuff she did with Bryndle.
I also can't stop listening to Steely Dan.
James Taylor also has an incredible number of really good songs. I wish I could play guitar like that, much less sing like that.

This is the 20th Anniversary of "Famous Blue Raincoat". They are re-releasing it on 180g, 45 rpm if that means anything to you. Got it on pre-order. Also available as a special anniversary seedee remaster.
I have almost all her original albums. On vinyl if available. She is also a songwriter.

I take it you have a nice high-end system.
I've had boyfriends try to turn me on repeatedly to Leonard Cohen and Jazz.
I just can't do either. Jazz I just don't understand, and Leonard Cohen makes me want to throw things and yell, "LIGHTEN UP! IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY OUTSIDE!"

I recently heard someplace that 80's music is now considered "oldies"!!! Heavens!!
I also love some of Bruce Cockburn's music. He had one very, very sexy song. Two versions, if I recall. One was very popular and fast. The other was the slower "acoustic" version. It is the acoustic version that I really liked. Can't remember how it goes. I heard it on a compilation of songs that included Shawn Colvin, Leonard Cohen, and another of my favorites, Mary Chapin Carpenter. Check it out (http://www.amazon.com/Best-Columbia-Records-Radio-Hour/dp/B000002ATE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1204226269&sr=8-1):

Now what is there not to love about this? I'm gonna cry...:D;)
I don't know why
The sky is so blue
And I don't know why
I'm so in love with you
But if there were no music
Then I would not get through
I don't know why
I know these things, but I do
I don't know why
But somewhere dreams come true
And I don't know where
But there will be a place for you
And every time you look that way
I would lay down my life for you
I don't know why
I know these things, but I do
I don't know why
But some are going to make you cry
And I don't know how
But I will get you by, I will try
They're not trying to cause you pain
They're just afraid of loving you
I don't know why
I know these things, but I do
I don't know why
The trees grow so tall
And I don't know why
I don't know anything at all
But if there were no music
Then I would not get through
I don't know why
I know these things, but I do
I don't know why
I know these things, but I do
