How many meals do you eat in a day. I have heard 5-6 small ones are better than 3 bigger ones. Do you count 3 meals and then 3 snacks. If so what are quick and healthy snacks I can take to school and eat with out any prep at school.

Thanks Greg

Here's a reasonably good article on the 6 meal plan.

I have 6: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack. Snack is typically small and some type of fruit, yogurt or veggies. It works for me.

I have 2, or 12 depending on what you count as a meal.

If you stick with the 6 meal plan it works really well in my experience.

More smaller "meals" works for me. I work construction, so I carry a lunch cooler with me. I have found that if I keep the energy flow constant it keeps me from having as many ups and downs. FRESH fruits and veggies are always a good choice. My theory is the less processed something is the better it is for me, so I have a tendency to shy away from things like granola bars, energy drinks, etc.

If you want something to snack on at school, try some vegetables and fruit already prepped and ready to eat. Fruits and vegetables make great snacks. You can also try some of the bars. I eat Fibre One bars as my snack. I think they are 140 calories and are pretty decent.

Celery with a little peanut butter, carrots, cauliflower, apples, pineapple (my favorite)

I eat all day. Here's a typical day for me.

7:30AM Lite yogurt
10 AM Whole fruit of veggies
noon 1.5-2 cups of mixed proteins, carbs and veggies
3PM Whole fruit or veggies
5PM Pre workout snack, usually half a peanut butter and honey sandwich
7M Post workout meal, usually 2-3 cups of mixed proteins and veggies
8PM Banana
9PM Light snack, maybe a hand full or two of check mix or something
10PM Big pickle

Raw almonds are a good choice. You can buy them already shelled, grad a handful and go.

1 scoop chocolate whey
1/3 cup no fat dry milk
1 cup skim milk
1 tblsp peanut butter
1 banana
1 tblsp no fat instant chocolate pudding
5 - 6 ice cubes

or

1 scoop vanilla whey
1/3 cup no fat dry milk
1 cup skim milk
1 cup mixed berries or 1 cup of 1 type of berry
1 tblsp no fat instant vanilla pudding
1 banana
5 - 6 ice cubes

snack
some type of fruit or low/no fat cottage cheese

lunch
1 can tuna drained
1/2 tblspn no fat mayo
1 egg white (hard boiled)
fruit

after lunch snack

A great book to read on this subject is "Living Lean" by Larry North. He lays out a nice progressive eating program and gives good ideas on how to make "better bad choices". The main this is that you eat. Very readable, and everything makes sense.

This sounds intriguing! I'm going to try this tomorrow. I've taken up swimming each morning, but the full cereal and fruit is a bit too much before my swim, but I start starving during the swim if I don't have something.

I always have 1 cup of Golean Crunch cereal, half a small container of raspberry yogurt, half cup of blueberries, two cups of melon chunks.

Lunch is a Lean Cuisine and an orange.

Snack is a double tall half sweet non fat mocha. No whip no foam. (The baristas hate me!)

Supper depends on mood. Often salad, grilled chicken breast and sauteed kale, or collards, or mustard greens, or brussel sprouts etc. But my husband likes a bit more variety and I hate preparing two different suppers, so it's sometimes spaghetti with meat sauce, or stir fry chicken with broccoli, he's mad about chicken and feta with spinach sausages along with brown rice and some more veggies.

Before bed I often have a banana. He has oatmeal with banana and skim milk.

Then I dream about cake. Almost every night.

My daily calorie range is about 1550-1650. Less, and I can't think. More, and well, I have to spend more time at the gym.

Most of the week I don't follow a strict meal plan. Like most large creatures, I tend to graze throughout the entire day. I keep fruit at my desk, and I'll munch on apple or orange slices during the morning. A bowl of oatmeal when I first get to work, a half sandwich or something similar around mid-day, more fruit the rest of the afternoon.

those protein shakes are 1 serving. they have about 300 - 400 cals, and close to 60g of protein. if your swimming, go for the vanilla one, its real light and tasty. double it up and take on with you to work, they make a great snack Im in the gym atleast 2 hours a day 6 - 7 days a week.

They are really really good. I'm having a chocolate one now

joshdavis

also, with the chocolate shake, dont put the peanut butter in and add 1 tblspn of instant coffee for a morning pick-me-up

Ooooo! Coffee sounds amazing (and a healthy way to feed my addiction)!

Thanks Josh!

There's probably a reason we are all in the Clyde forum! 3 meals a days is fine - if you have to snack, snack light.

Jillian Michaels (one of the trainers - the most sucessful! on the Biggest Loser) talks about this. You might want to check out her theories on weight loss at:

2 year journey doing this. i've gone for 450 - 475 to 250 (currently). Give me a few and I will find some pics. I could have lost more but I stopped for a little bit. Eating 3 big meals is worse than eating 6 - 7 small meals. I usually burn 1500+ cals in the gym, so I have to keep fuel in my body. A lot of people crash diet and fall of quick, you have to find what works for you. The protein drinks work for me, they are suggestions. I'm 23 years old, I know why Im here and I plan on getting out.

Breakfast: Homemade oatmeal in the morning (steel cut oats, milk, raisins, walnuts, cinnamon, apple cubes, brown sugar and a pinch of cloves cooked over night in a crock pot)

10am snack: Any fruit, mostly banana, apple, orange, pear or whatever else I find in the fruit basket at home

Lunch: Whole grain bread with sliced turkey, salad, tomato, onions, slice of avocado, slice o' cheese and mustard. One piece of dove dark chocolate for dessert
Afternoon snack: yoghurt with granola

Dinner: A small portion of whatever my mom-in-law makes. Sopa, Chile Rellenos, Fajitas, Quesadilla or whatever else is on the mexican menu :D

Late night snack: 1 hour training ride on the rollers with a protein shake right after the workout

I try and eat 6 meals a day, I use apples, bananas, and other fruit as well as protein bars and shakes as fill in on the snacks when the schedule gets tight. Try not to eat alot of packaged foods and try very hard to control portions. i.e. nothing larger than my fist which may sound kinda stupid but seems to work....and provides a constant point of reference...

Depends whether I'm bulking or cutting...

I was 310 at one point but then got into lifting weights, currently ~225-235 depending on the above w/ 10-13% body fat. I'm 28 and I've kept in that range for about six years by eating six a day @ ~330 cals a "meal" or 3000 total if lifting hard / riding hard or longer distances.

I'm not sure what type of information you're interested in. Do you really care how many meals we eat, or are you asking for helpful suggestions regarding a specific topic, e. g. weight loss, endurance on a bicycle, strength, touring?

For what it's worth, I eat three meals a day with snacks whenever I feel like it. However, when I'm on a multi-day or multi-week bicycle tour I eat four meals a day, plus snacks whenever I feel like it. The four meals are first breakfast (bagels or oatmeal I cook in camp), second breakfast (something hearty from a restauarant, like ham and eggs with hashbrowns and toast, lunch (usually a sandwich from a deli, but Taco Bell is good occasionally when I'm in the mood and can find one), and dinner (something I cook in the campground - chili with salad and top ramen, chicken (from a grocery store's deli), steak, potatoes, rice, spaghetti, etc. - pretty much what I eat at home, except I have to be a bit creative as to how I cook it.

Uh-oh. I'm not the guy who can help you. I always seem to gain a little weight on my long tours. :) And my blood pressure has always been excellent, but I attribute that to the fact that I'm a lifelong cyclist. So that's positive I guess.
