Question of the Day (Tuesday)

What is your favorite type of pedal/cleat?

I've tried SPD and Look before, and the Ultegras are the best by far. Love them.

Speedplay. I'm going back to them since my knees don't like Look (or any other self centering system) anymore.

Keo is great. Easy to get in and out of, but still stays secure. Didn't really like spd's too much, and never could get the hang of Time (although I like the metal cleats, instead of plastic).

Seven votes...three comments. hmmm...who are the lurkers?

SPD I guess, I also have Time Atac on one of the bikes.

I don't really like being clipped in. My BMX pedals are my favorite right now.

SPDs. I can walk in them, they require zero maintenance or cleaning, clipping/unclipping is a breeze, and they work.

Look pp357 on both my bikes.

I like the walkability of SPD-SL cleats since I never remember to bring cleat covers.

i use crank brothers on my fixed gear and cross bike, but on the roadie, LOOK KEOs all the way.

Keo's don't self-center. FYI.

+1 I use Froggies on my Giant and really like the float.

Crankbrothers. Quattros, Eggbeaters, Candies on the roadie, commuter/CX, and fixed gear. I've got another pair of Candies to go on the Casseroll. :)

Crank Brothers Egg beaters. Easy clip in/out, simple, walkable lightweight. I might put Quattros on the hybrid so I can use it during the day at work.

The float and double sided entry is great....

I voted for Shimano SPD-SL since that is what I am using now. But I'm considering Speedplay Zero's just because I'm thinking I could use a little more float that the Shimano's offer.

When I first glanced at the poll, I thought it read strap-ons....

Darn, that information is about 2 days too late, as I just bought a set of Zeros. I tried to find that information on the Look website and couldn't find it. The representative from Time at the ToC booth didn't even seem to understand what self centering meant, and the Speedplay booth had a setup so I could try the Zeros right there.

I could have saved some money by going with Keos, but Look didn't trump up that feature enough to catch my attention. Ah well. I like the ability to adjust float, though. More when my knees are bothering me, less when I don't want to be flopping around.

I used to use Looks but a few years ago I switched to the SPD type when I realized I spend more time off the bike socializing than actually riding.

I have been using Time road pedals for almost 20 years.. Current using the rxs time pedals on the road bikes and the Atac XE's for the cross and mountain bikes..

I use SPD for road and then have a set of BMX pedals with clips for my fixed gear that I also use for off road.

I definitely prefer shoes that I can walk in. There's been a couple of times that I broke down while commuting to work, and had to walk the last 2 or 3 miles to get to work.

KeO's for me. I've been on the red cleats since May of last year - prolly getting close to needing to replace them.

spd's for my mtb tho.

Speedplay Zeros. They're the only clipless system I've used (just got them after Christmas) and they're great. I liked the idea of being able to adjust my float and the two-sided entry, so I got these. Plus if I ever have severe problems with them, they're made here in San Diego, so I can just go to them for help.

I enjoy my SPDs and cross shoes because they're easy to walk in. Clipping in does take a bit of concentration and effort, but clipping out is a breeze.

SPD-R

But I really don't have a single favorite-- I like different pedals for different things.

SPD-R for racing
old SPD style mountain pedals from look for commuting, MTB, and touring (bigger platform than regular SPD, and double sided)
cages and double straps as a fallback.

What's self centering? I'm in the market for new pedals. Using Egg Beaters now but can't stand them. Looking at the Keo's since they seem light and popular.

SPD MTB 520's cause they don't squeak. I tried Look pedals but my legs didn't pedal faster so I ditched them!:D

Look Keo for my road bikes and Time Atac for my mtb. The Time Atac is a little bit too strong for my taste though. :p

I was thinking of Time RXS, but went with Time because of one bad user report on RBR.

I thought that was a given.

Of course, you can't put new pedals on an old crank.

My original gen1 ATAC cleats lasted so long that when I needed to replace it I found out they had changed the screw pattern to not be proprietary. I ended up having to buy new shoes as well. The current cleat design is much more efficient at wearing out.

Cleats with play have 2, 3, or 4 degrees of float on either side of this "centered" position. In a self-centering system, the angle of the cleat (or the pedal mechanism itself) forces your foot back to a centered position.
