Dude---this is serious ***** You need to wash your shorts after every ride. Re-using used bacteria-ridden bike shorts can have very nasty and unpleasant consequences and result in 3 weeks of antibiotics.

True. When riders talk about "saddle sores" what they're talking about is infections.

If I am out long enough to require bike shorts, then I wash them right after.

Typically take them in the shower with me after I ride and give a good rinse out.
Go through the washing machine whenever I have to do a load or whenever they stink.
I do have a pair of friends who road across the US and never washed their shorts. I smelled them before I saw them.

when i walk past the door they're hanging on and wonder whose lap it was that i just lifted my head out of, it's generally time to either wash my shorts or wash my beard.

Wash mine after every time they're ridden. I'm either wearing them on rollers or any ride over 20 miles. Either way I'm sweating a lot in them. Almost always hand wash them too. I couldn't force myself to reuse dirty shorts if I wanted...

Did he mean saddle sores or did he mean a urinary tract infection? 3 wks of antibiotics is no joke.

I thought saddle sores were caused first and foremost by irritation?

The Wikipedia definition for saddle sore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saddle_sores) appears legitimate. Not washing your shorts (or cleaning your genitals) regularly is a bad idea. As many people already mentioned it can lead to infections, which can be very serious (e.g. MRSA, VRE).
