Road Cycling - why couldnt the ToC have been this week?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well, that's what you get when you schedule it for February, right? Maybe as it gets bigger, they can move it back a couple of months.

Probably because it would interfere with a well known Eruo race. Don't have a schedule in front of me, but Paris-Nice must be coming up...

Maybe in September? It would be a little cooler but the Sierras would be accessible.

that would be so sweet. something like a stage from placerville to tahoe and then a stage that goes around lake tahoe with a detour to go over donner summit. that would be so awesome.

Cause this week, we wouldn't be able to see who had HTFU.

didn't over 30 riders abandon? I'm relatively new to the whole cylcing thing.. but that seems like a lot of needing to htfu if you get paid to do it!

it's the beginning of he season, and unless you're a domestic pro, the ToC is a pretty meaningless race.

Early season. Classics coming. Rain. Hard course. Seemed like there were enough people there who were lighting it up.

I am sure a lot of riders chose to pull out and save themselves from getting sick or hurt before the classics, or actually were in fact sick or hurt.

+1 - I was trying to find a nice way to tell a bunch of Californians that to the Euro crew the ToC is kind of worthless.

That said I think it's great that it is doing so well for a race based in America

I got a laugh from Boonen's comment that the weather in Belgium is better than California because their rain is warmer.

This year's weather was just sick for racing. Once temps get close to the freezing point with the wind chill, all bets are off. The stage that Rollin won (4?) was full on evil.

I'd like to see the ToG and ToC team up as one race. What are the chances that will ever happen?

Because I like to see a successful break once in a while.

With all the wireless/telemetry communications going on now it's getting more and more rare to see a break actually make it.
They know to the fourth decimal place just how much a lead the break has and how fast they need to be to catch it at the last moment so nobody gets the smart idea of doing another break. When I watched racing in the 80's you'd see many more breaks actually making it.

Ugh, I was thinking the same thing as I was walking down the street here in San Luis Obispo and it is 75 degrees. I would venture to guess that the race is scheduled at that time because there are other races that conflict with it if it was later. Paris-Nice comes to mind as one that is very important to these riders. Although, with the UCI/ASO pissing match who knows if Paris-Nice is even going to go this year.
