Manolo's boys are toast. Sadly say good bye to ONCE. Shame Saiz acted so badly during the Vuelta that he scared any suitors away. :(

They may be back in business next year.

The hot news out of Spain is that Manolo Saiz, sport director of the out-going ONCE team, has lined up a new sponsor to take over the team.
The latest issue of Meta 2Mil - a weekly Spanish cycling newspaper - reports that Stayer, an Italian home and garden tool manufacturer is poised to pick up the team's title sponsorship.
The newspaper reported the deal will be announced after this weekend's world championships. Saiz is reportedly already signing up riders, including the stable of ONCE riders such as Joseba Beloki, 2003 Vuelta runner-up Isidro Nozal, Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano, Isidro Nozal, Mikel Pradera, Angel Vicioso, Marcos Serrano and Aussie Allan Davis.
Other names linked to the team include Italian riders Giovanni Lombardi and Filippo Pozzato.

Fingers crossed - they've been a great team, with some real talent.

There is an excellent article in Cycle Sport about the difficulty Spansih teams have finding Spanish sponsors. Few Spanish companies really have a global interest (according to the sources in the article) and fewer have a large interest doing business, as was quoted "on the other side of the Pyrenees". These teams are primarily Spansih so to find a non-Spanish focused company with money to sponsor them will be difficult.
It will be interesting. Many of the riders state that they will not be able to find jobs...and this was interesting....many parents (due to traffic and driving issues) are not supportive of their kids' getting into cycling. As a result of all of this, they indicated that a new team may surface, but it will not be "Spanish".
According to the team via the article, is costs about $10.5 mill a year to run Once.
