Introductions - freezing in the mid-west

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi all. Newbie here from Kansas City area. Have been biking for some ime. Looking to complete my first iron man this summer. Currently upgrading an old double to a triple (plan on riding some Denver mountains this summer). Looking forward to sharing info.
I'm with you on the freezing in the mid-west part, I live in Des Moines and can't take it anymore. Still biking to work, just wearing lots of layers. Moab and Fruita are in the cards for me in May.

Hi rabidgirl, what are you riding for your Ironman? Are you out there riding right now?
Welcome to BF!

Glad to hear there are some other popsicle people out there. I completely quit riding outside when the tepms got below 45. Yes, I am a weenie. :)
I am currently riding on a trainer indoors... it is driving me crazy. Coach Troy has become as boring as boring can get. I think I know every article of clothing in his closet. I feel like the other riders are my best friends. OK... that does mean I've been training inside for too long. :(
I have a Giant OCR (Dura Ace double) that I am riding in the triathlon, but am fixing up my old Giant TCR (becoming Ultegra triple) for initial outside training and Colorado mountains.

Yes, you have been training inside too long :p . I just heard that Colorado has 200% of the normal snowpack this year...massive amounts of snow back east. Here in Washington State we are way over budget for avalanche control of the mountain passes!
Fortunately for me, spring is here, and the days are starting to get sunny. Seriously! I've had to use my sunglasses several times in the past week  .
So, don't worry, spring will be here soon for you too :) .
Photos of the bikes?

Hey it's a popcycley kinda NE as well! Welcome aboard!
Welcome to the area. It's supposed to warm up this weekend. I've been riding all winter. But I sure am ready for some shorts weather. What part of town are you in? You might check these local sites.

Thanks for the links deanp. I live near KCI... plenty of hills where I ride. Are you a JCBC member? I rode several of their rides last year. Excellent support. Lone Star was my first long ride ever. Could praise them enough... except the wind was brutal. :-( Say, do you have any recommendations for a bike shop? Haven't yet found a shop in the area that I really like.
Yes, I am a JCBC member. The bike shops I am familiar the most with are on this side of town. The Trek store on Shawnee Mission Parkway and Bike Source at 135th and Quivira. There is an interesting shop downtown called Acme. Two ladies run it and it is a little off beat and they are great sources for vintage stuff, or if you are trying to bolt together two things that weren't made to go together.

Welcome! I live and ride in the Colorado Springs area but look forward to getting up to the Denver area sometime this spring. Living in Colorado it is still snowing on a regular basis but this week has been blessedly beautiful.

Speaking of Colorado... am considering riding the Iron Horse this year... 50 miles from Durango to Silverton. Either of you ever ride it?
I'm not a tri-guy, just a fitness rider, I can't give you any insight on that.

Des Moines must be clearing the roads better than Cedar Rapids. I haven't seen a road clear enough to ride a bike on in way too long.

Amen on the cold. I'm in rural Northern Michigan, and it's lousy here. Non-stop snow nearly all winter, which in MI means Oct-May
Not that clear, just bought me some studded tires...
We're headed for the 60's tomorrow!!! It is going to be very windy though.
