I'm planning to head North to south along the Mississippi in Iowa (where I live) as soon as the frost clears and it gets warm enough to not freeze to death in a tent. I'm wondering if anyone has ever done this ride before and if they have any suggestions as for roads to take or places to stay.

My plan is to start in New Albin, IA. Then a short ride to Pikes Peak State park (McGregor IA) to camp. Then to Dubuque for the night, on to Clinton IA for the night, and on to Muscatine IA where I can stay with a friend. And finally ending in Keokuk IA where I'll crash at a friends.

I'd love to hear any experiences from the same or a similar tour. I think this will be a good way to get the season started.

I've never gone that way but will be interested in the same information. I'm planning to do a portion of your route this summer coming from Illinois/Wisconsin, crossing the Mississippi at the Cassville, WI ferry and heading north to Waukon. Like your Avatar.

Hi,

There is a great website on the Mississippi River and the Great River Road. The site's author, Pat Middleton has also written four books on the GRR from Minnesota to Louisiana. I hope this helps.
