How many of you guys/gals do Duathons? I will be doing one this year. I've gotten my run mile time down to 9 minutes or so and my 10 mile ride down to 35 mins. Its a 2m run, 10m ride, 2m run. My concern is that last 2 miles. I'm still trying to condition for that part.

I am planning on at least one sprint triathlon, one olympic distance triathlong and a few 5k and 10k runs along with a few century rides. I don't know of any duathlons in my area, but I would be up for those also.

I've been thinking about doing a duathlon this year. I do run, but I'm not very fast. I expect to get killed by the runners.

I'm training for a couple sprint triathlons this spring and summer.

Should be fun.

Should hurt. :D

We've got one schedualed for this comming summer. 31 miler around Grand Island(NY) followed by kayaking half the Island
I kayak vs run. Try to alternate days (I'm retired:o) between outings on the Erie Canal and morning cycles with the club. I've found the kayak paddling an excellent alternate to the cycling. Builds a breathing cadence/works the upper body.

I should have asked this sooner, but today I bought some Asics shoes for a triathalon I am planning on doing this year. What shoes are good for Clydes to run in?

Go to a running show store and get fitted to the shoe that will work with your running style. I ended up with Brooks Beast. They were $120, but that is the best feeling I have had running in years!!!! I got the proper shoe for me, and it shows. There were four shoes that would work for me, and I ended up with the Beast. My running shoe store is called Peak Performance, I have no idea what is in your area, but you can search running+shoe+store+(hometown) and see what you get with Google.

I did a 2/10/2 duathlon with my wife last fall... Like you, I'm a much stronger biker than runner, and the run was a pretty serious up/down/sideways trail run, nothing remotely close to flat, and the bike route was a combination of asphalt, gravel roads, forest trails, and even a loop through a grassy meadow. I started training in the middle of the summer, though, and by the time I got there, was in pretty good shape.

The trick -- If you can survive the initial two mile run, you tend to recover a bit on the bike. Once you're done with the bike, the first couple hundred yards of the second run are pretty painful, but once your legs get used to running and not biking again, it seemed to me the rest of the final run just sorta went on autopilot. (We had been training as part of a group, and after finishing, I even went back and finished the run again with the last member of our training group).

Granted, I was nowhere near competitive with the serious runners and bikers, but I finished, and met my own personal goal for time.

Give it a shot, the second run isn't nearly as bad as you think. Much harder to do two runs back-to-back than to stick the bike route in the middle. Good luck!

Time to dredge this thread back up...
Tom Stormcrowe and his latest event--since he is my hero--has me thinking about a triathlon. I was talking to the wife about it and she said she would never do a tri since it involves swimming--she's out! The duathlon seems to appeal to her though. So, since this is something that we would prolly be doing together I have to take her wants/needs into consideration.
So, since I am up to doing 30 milers on the bike, I figure the bike part is not too much trouble. But, the last time I ran, parachute pants had not been invented. The running is going to take some work.
So, does anyone have suggestions for sites--preferably free!!--that deal with training for a du (or as they say in Louisiana--a Deaux). I am looking for a training plan or advice or anything that might be helpful. As I sit here thinking about it as I type, I suppose the key to training for this would be to get out there and run!

I want a duathlon that is swimming and bicycling.

At 68, I really don't want to run, nor am I any good at it.

But, I swim several hours per week, and bike about 150 miles.

Why the big emphasis on running when running eventually kills most folks knees, while swimming is easy on and good for your body?

I knew I had seen what you are looking for. It is called an "Aquabike". Swimming and biking only.

It looks as if it is mostly entrenched in Europe

I am just starting to train for a Duathlon in October. It is a three mile run, a ten mile ride, and then a two mile run. I have not run much since I was in junior high school. The running is going pretty pitiful. I did a two mile run this morning (with more walking than running) immediately followed by a 5 mile ride. I still have a long way to go, but I think that it is going to be an adventure along the way. :thumb:

Here is one (http://www.racingunderground.com/harvestmoon/) I found in your area. 1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike ride. That seems like a pretty full day.
As the man said, "Just how big a boy are ya?"

OK - here is the link that will work:

http://www.racingunderground.com/harvestmoon/

That is just a few miles from me. BUt, 1.2 miles and 56 miles in the same day is a bit out of my range.

Thanks so much for the info. I am learning a lot, and hope aquabikes become more common, and that they have "sprint" aquabikes someday.

Yeah, that seems like a bit much. As my grandpa used to say, "Be sure to bring your lunch cause yer gonna be at it a while!"
BTW-I fixed the link. Thanks for the heads-up

thanks for the name (aquabike) i have also been looking for something like this 1.2 and 56 sounds pretty good :) i would actually like like .8 and 62, I hate running but will probably do it for a sprint by the end of this year.

Does anyone else have trouble finding places to swim, you know for free? I am loathe to pay for a membership somewhere just to swim, but don't know anywhere to train for such distances :(

Where do you guys train for the swim? (i know alot are outside is there benefit to practicing on the course?)
