Hey ladies and gents. I'm awful at bicycle mechanics as I am just starting out, and changing a flat/adjusting my brakes is about as technical as I get. However, recently I screwed up my chain tension (don't ask.) I have managed to get it back "in the ballpark" as I can shift between gears 2 and 6.. just not the lowest or highest gears without a lot of slipping back and forth.

This is all on the rear gears.

What gear should the rear shifter be in to let out enough cable? The bike was set up fine before I adjusted the cable leading to the rear gearwheels. Sorry for my lack of proper terminology - if anyone could direct me to a good link on basic bike dérailleur adjustments and whatnot, that'd be great too

Oh.. I should mention, the bike is a road bike and I am running a 105 on the rear and tiagra shifters. it is a compact chain ring.

Okay my good man here's what I would recommend.

The Park Tools Website (http://www.parktool.com/repair/)

They should have a good explanation for most things you want for free. I also recommend picking up a copy of "Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance". I love that book.
