Commuting - My office rules!

Sent by the building manager this morning- when I first opened it I thought it would be a complaint!


RE: Bicycle Rack by South Entrance

The mail carrier informed me today of a man loitering around the area where your coworkers lock up their bicycles. I am recommending that you let them know they can keep their bicycles in the lobby (behind the “Guard Desk”), as long as they aren’t inhibiting access to the emergency exit or hallways. Also, please let me know if anyone notices this guy again. He is blonde, wearing a baseball cap and riding a bicycle.

Very cool; sounds like you have a good landlord!

I am the only cyclist riding to my office building, and lock the bike up on the loading dock at the side of the building. The only eyes in this area are those of the occasional smokers that hang out back there and the delivery guys, so my bike could fall prey at any time.

That's really considerate. I've been fortunate enough to work places that allowed me to park my bike in my office or cubicle for the last ten years. I did have a run-in once with the landlord of the building I was working in. I worked for a university that was leasing office space. My boss didn't mind if I kept my bike in the office, but once the landlord saw me rolling off the elevator with it and gave me a lot of attitude telling me he didn't want muddy wheels mucking up the carpet. Given the age of the carpet, the fact that people muck it up with their muddy feet all the time, and the fact that my tires were rarely that muddy; I continued to park my bike in the office and just tried to avoid the landlord. He was rarely there anyway.

My current office is fantastic! I work for the City of Bellingham, Washington. Not only do they provide bike racks in high traffic/visible locations, but I can park my bike in my office as well. They do a lot to encourage bicycle commuting and take part in the Smart Trips organization. I login to a website to record smart trips. Prizes are awarded when you reach certain milestones. The best part is that you get a Smart Trips card that gets you discounts at local businesses... really good discounts as a matter of fact.

When I was a teenager in the 1980s people made fun of me for riding a bicycle all the time instead of playing football (I grew up in the South). Now I'm rewarded for it!

But in seriousness, great that you have better parking now. I have a bike locker, but it leaks, and is allways very damp.

Now you're in shape and have a extra money that you don't spend on gas... They're out of shape, have chronic back problems and crushed joints, and low cash due to $3.00 gas and medical bills.

My first class in the morning is a weightlifting and conditioning class. I usually ride in, bring my bike into the building, down into the lockeroom located in the basement, and chain it up to the benches that are cemented in the floor in front of my locker. I am the only bike on campus, and most everyone, including the security guards, know it's there. I haven't had a steal in the year I've been commuting.

I'm lucky too in being able to keep my bike in my office. I'm not too worried about thieves at my building but would rather not have to fool with locking it up and leaving it outside in the rain.

I have the option of keeping my bike in the rack in the card-key access garage blow the building or bringing it upstairs to my office. I usually choose to bring it inside. There are 4 or 5 other riders on the floor who bring theirs up as well.

In my last job I had to use the rack by the loading dock. I never really felt it was safe there. I like this place much better.

That's awesome! My workplace is getting more bike-friendly as well. Maybe things are changing for the better.

We're in an area with a few shady characters wandering through all the time; it's not unsafe, but you have to be on guard. The reasoning here is that unless you're working in one of the buildings you have no reason to be in this business park (and our office is particularly high on security for reasons I won't mention).

Either way, I'm just glad that bikes being inside is of no issue whatsoever- we never really clarified it before so I was always waiting for someone to say something.

Nice! My employer lets me keep my bicycle in my cube next to my desk. Thus I always ride my expensive road bike.

I'm the office manager where I work. There's always room for another bike. :)

Our company just purchased us new bike lockers and placed them just outside our fitness center door so they are right where we change and shower..I really appreciate their consideration!:D

Commercial grade carpet is built to be cleaned heavily and often. I usually try to carry my bike if the tires are dirty (although obviously it's going to get grubby where it comes to rest, I suppose I could lay out a sheet or towel but I have the feeling that would look worse).

Sounds like a cool deal. I'd like to see more employers do little things to encourage people to commute. As little as "we're okay with cubicle parking" and "you should ride, here's a few notes about the benefits" would impress me. I think many people don't realize how viable a bike is for commuting.

I've been bringing my bike up for the last 4 years to the 5th floor and parking it either in an unused hallway (in a safe local right around the corner from me) or eventually in an unused office - especially when one of the Associate Deans I work with - started commuting parttime when she started working at my building (I didn't realize it at the time either) and her bike was stolen from the parking garage attached to my building - and where the bikes are parked has the vantage point of not one, but two on-duty parking garage/security attendants (have walked by the one guy - who was totally leaned back in his old office chair with mouth open sleeping ....) - so anyway - it was established by the Dean of my campus (also a bicyclist) that one office was to be used by our bicycles.

And then we got real busy downtown (which is good) so more manpower was needed, so away went our 5th floor bicycle garage (shoot - I had a chair in there and a mirror so we could change in there too) - but luckily the other commuter has a higher level position - plus the college is really in an energetic motion to be green and commute, etc - so now our parking spot is in a big stockroom - also within a 30 second walk from my office. However, I wonder what would have happened had I not had her as "clout" ... :( something I hope.

That's fantastic news to know they do care! Were do you work in Redondo Beach? I'm in Gardena/Torrance area and if you have an email address I'd like to let them know that I really think the company's that support employees as they have have my business and support. :beer:

Really not necessary.. besides, we're in the same business field. :) Our office is in Marina Del Rey.
