So I'm trying to build this bike on the cheap to get to/from work. So far I have a bunch of stuff from my parts bin to build this however came across a $5.99 Shimano Mega derailleur on Nashbar. Anyone have any thoughts on this? It says its for 6/7 speeds. Can I assume that like many of their other derailleurs, I can use 8/9 speed cassette on this with no problems? I'm going to be using an SRAM (shimano compatible) 9speed shifter.

I'm pretty sure it should be fine.

Is it an index compatible derailleur? If so, it should work.

And don't laugh, but call Nashbar's Tech support to see what they think. You can usually judge if the guy you get on the phone really has a clue.

I think the term is "frankenbike" :D The "6/7" speed derailer will work.

This makes me think of a SS frankenbike a high school friend of mine made out of necessity. He actually shortened the chain with a nail and hammer... horrible way to do it I might add.
