Some of you in warmer climes have many miles under your wheels already this year. I salute you! My total?

Wait for it...

Zero. Goose Egg. Nada, nothing, zip. As a matter of fact, I haven't been on my bike since the beginning of October. I guess I could blame the weather... or the lack of light when I get home in the evening... or the broken toe that stopped my riding last year.

But really, it's just me. I have the clothing to face the weather, as long as it's not icy. I don't ride in the dark, but that really hasn't been an issue for a few weeks now. The toe has healed nicely. I've only got 62 stinking miles on my bike since I purchased it last fall and now that I'm thinking about it, that is making me angry. I need to get motivated to get back out there and RIDE!! I've got 25 pounds to lose and a 38 mile "race" later this summer to train for.

It's 50 degrees today and the sun will still be out for a bit when I get home. It'll be ugly, but I'm going for a ride.

Good for you! I know it gets hard to motivate yourself in the colder temps, hence my own low mileage for the last couple of weeks. Good luck getting back in the swing of things!

Go find a decent light and a blinkie and cruise a neighborhood in the dark. Not as much fun as in the daytime, but beats sitting around the house.

I beg to differ. Night riding is fun riding. Quiet, less traffic and just as soothing as day riding. While my mileage has cut way back, I'm still commuting and running errands. Plus, I like when the weather's cooler. Go ride your bike and don't look at it as training. Just ride.

I hear you! I haven't been on a real ride since the week before Xmas, mostly due to ice and snow on the roads around here. I did find a mag trainer for $10 at GW and have managed to log 340 miles since the New Years on that watching DVDs. They aren't the most fun miles, but I figure its better than no miles.

I broke my toe last year as well, bumping into things in the dark, no cool story to tell alas. If it gives you any problems what worked for me was thinner socks, roomy shoes, and taking the clips off my pedals for a month. Basically anything to remove pressure.

Good luck on your ride.

You'll be glad you forced yourself onto your bike. Last weekend I so didn't want to go out in the cold but just 10 mins into the ride it felt soooo good.

50. that's not cold ya wimp, it's -11℃ (13℉) here, wind chill is -22C (-8F) thanks to the 45km/h (28MPH) winds, decidedly not bike friendly weather. I !@#$%^& HATE THIS !@#$%^& WEATHER ALREADY, the one day warmiish, next day cold, next day frigid, next day cold, next day warmish (repeat ad nausium), means that if you don't have the flu, you have a cold, and many folks are blessed with both, and there is the never ending cold going around this year, my SO has had it for 2 weeks, some folks have had it for a month.....

Personally I don't ride in snow, typically because city crews to deposit copious amount of snow removing chemicals on the road, this rather caustic chemical eats bicycle frames, and I like my bike (strangely never gave a crap about the car). Of course nary a gram of the same chemical for sidewalks, so if you don't drive, forget going anywhere.....

Today my street is a skating rink thanks to a busted water main. There was a good thing though, they used a big front end loader to push the snow banks back about a metre (yard), to find the edge of the road......

I wouldn't stress out too much. I used to commute everyday in the cold when I lived in Minneapolis but now I just don't ride if there's snow on the ground. The trainer is fine for me and when I get bored of that I buy a gym membership.

Oh nite riding can be very nice, exhilirating (did I spell that correctly?:D). It was getting dark here about 4:30. I'd ride from the foothills up the base of the mtns when it was dark. Very nice when you get above the traffic. I felt much safer at night with the lights than during the day, in that area anyways.

I'd still do it but my daughter has been dragging me to the gym 4 days a week. Only got so much time after 9 hour days.:D

Here's looking down my driveway, out there's the road.
I'm going back in to see if there's any bike racing on TV.

(Haven't ridden since 12/22/07, but one month of that was due to a back injury from a slip on some ice. Still...no excuse)

Hey Wogster! Yer right on both counts: (1) 50 ain't cold and (2) I'm a wimp... Weather here is much like yours. Saturday I was pounding fence posts through the frost, but the sun was shining. Sunday it was snowing and miserable.

Oh good LORD, my seat is sore! 8.4 miles, took about 45 minutes. Slow, but a good start.

I wrap my tires in chains whenever there's snow or ice. Never let a bit of inclement weather get in the way of a ride.

It's sounds like you have all the motivation you need. As for being away from the bike, don't beat yourself up over it. Each day starts anew.
