whats goind on guys, im a newbie. I would like to buy a new mountain bike,i live in ny city and have a crappy old mountain bike from years ago. I would like somthing that is double suspension so i was thinking of an all mountain or a cross country, im not sure but i think cross countrys have less travel and are lighter than all mountains so i think a corss country might be better for me since i doubt im going to be seeinf any drops. I wanted to spend 1000-1500 and i was thinking of buying a 2003 so i could get a deal. Can any one recomend some sepcific models for me, so far i have looked at some gay fishers cannondales and a klein palamino that i cant afford but really want. shout out some models and tell me what u think i should get. A store wants to sell me a 2003 rock hopper for 1000 with disc brakes, is this a good deal.? If any one knows of some good stores in ny help me out thanks

Kona Dawg. You could probably get an '03 in your price range or save 100 more and get an '04.

The Specialized is a good deal for $1,000.00.
You've really hit the majic numbers for a full suspension bike. For under $1,500.00 there are SOOOOOO many to choose from. This is probably one of the most competitive price ranges for bikes today (read: good deals).
Some bikes to considers that were not mentioned. Haro's line of bikes: www.harobikes.com
Iron Horse with their Hollowpoint or SGS (more FR oriented): www.ironhorsebikes.com
The Kona's are also great bikes as mentioned: www.konaworld.com
Heck, I could go on and on.
You just need to visit some LBS's and test ride as many as possible.

I just demo'd a Specialized Epic on familiar trails on a 2 hour ride and I'm sold. I'm keeping my eye out now for a good deal on one. Definately a cross country bike - no hucking on this one. I'm a pretty big guy and this felt solid and stable but nible on the trails. I'm moving from my Specialized Enduro to the Epic as soon as I can figure it into my budget.

whaqt kind of bike is the klein palomino, i saw it and really liked it, it was 2500$ but im gonna see if i can get a deal cause my friend knows the guy who works in the store. what would be a steal for the klein. Also what about gary fisher how much would a nice xc from him cost, or whaty about trek cannondale or specialized. is there a reason why there not making the rockhopper fsr any more. i Know some one in another store but i think they deal with haro and marin in there so how are those bikes? thanks for the help. Also if im 5'7 what size do i need.

I would recommend that you read http://www.mtbreview.com/ or http://www.nsmb.com
I don't understand why you asked a question about a certain price point then came back with something costing about $1000 more. It's compairing apples to oranges.
Set a price point and research what people say given a certain price point. Otherwise you'll never find the answer you are looking for. ;)
The Rockhopper FSR form last year is this years FSR XC

How about Jamis anyone have one?
Cannondale Jekyll all the way. I've talked to a Specialized owner today and he said he regretted ever getting rid of his Jekyll. Besides ... it's beautiful! :)

well my reasoning for asking about bikes that are in totally different price ranges is because im might be able to get a big deal in a peteicual store and these are the bikes they have there. so depending wether i get a deal i can buy a bike for much more.
