I have platform pedals on my touring bike and ride in either Shimano SPD shoes without the cleats, or in sneakers. Have used clipless, but much prefer the platforms. My problem is that I had to have minor surgery today to remove a large painful wart from the back of my right heel. :cry: I won't be able to wear shoes or sandals that rub that area until it completely heals. The Doc said if I'm lucky it may only take several weeks. Do any of you tour in shoes that are completely open in the back? I've done short rides in Crocs or even flip-flops, but I'm looking for something good for those 50 and 60 mi touring days.

Check these out, looks like the heal strap folds into the shoe. I have some water sandals like this and it's not too uncofmortable, especially with socks.

I've toured many many miles with Shimano touring sandals.
I have never had a problem.
Also Keen has touring sandals now at REI.
I just ordered a pair.

I have two different pairs of Skechers "mule" type shoes, one heavier cross trainer style and my new light biker pair. They've been ok, though they are more comfortable with clips/straps on long distances. I know the cross trainers were men's, I'm not sure if the biker series is women's only or not.
