I'm a jack of all trades municipal planner. Transportation equity issues certainly fall under my purview. I tend to lurk more than post and spend more time reading the road cycling forums. :)

This is a relatively simple poll which attempts to get a rough idea of how many participants to the A&S forum are also employed in the field, either voluntarily or professionaly.

I've been in the field of bicycle transportation for thirty-five years, participating in the committees responsible for bikeway standard design, for bicycle transportation science development, for traffic law, for cyclist training, and a few other ancillary committees, but I have never been paid by any of these. Government will pay only for what it wants done, rather than for what should be done, and the volunteer organizations are, of course, best run by volunteers. The only people whom I have discovered who will pay professional rates for accurate information, capable of standing up to cross examination, about bicycle transportation affairs are attorneys with bicycle accident cases. So that's where I earn that portion of my income that comes from bicycling affairs. Oh, yes, a little comes from bicycling books, also.

I am an engineer involved in routing printed circuit board designs used for wireless communications.

I have been riding a bike for over 40 years, have lived car free for some 7 years, and have commuted to work on bike on and off since the mid 70's. I have also long distance bike toured both here in the US and in Mexico.

I currently own 3 bikes.

I have represented local cyclists in public hearings regarding local road improvement.

I was on the City of Portland's Bicycle Advisory Committee for over 12 years, and on a bunch of other project-specific Advisory Committees, for a variety of arterial street plans, bike parking, bike safety, etc. Perhaps surprisingly, more often than not I find myself to be an advocate for vehicular cycling in these settings.

I started out living on my bike as a kid, riding to elementary school, and bike touring in Canada in the 70's. I am a lifelong bicycle commuter, and for the past five years have been into a variety of 'bike culture' activities, including participating in Critical Mass rides, Pedalpalooza and ZooBomb, among others.

Hmmm, I'd vote, but the selection of 'cycling instructor/educator' isn't on the list.

There aren't a lot of us who do this full time, but I'm making a living at it and am developing an extensive program to help others do the same.

I just spent three weeks in Victoria, BC teaching instructors, leading courses and workshops for the public and for a government ministry, and training people who work in the school system to lead courses for kids.

It's a fantastic way to make a living and I wouldn't want to do anything else. When people talk about what we'd do if we won the lottery, I grin, because I'm doing it :)

I guess since other people are posting details I'll add my own.

I'm a GNU/Linux systems administrator (specializing in Red Hat, CentOS and Fedora). I've been riding nearly daily for twenty years spreading that time across Ireland, the UK, Canada and the USA with small amounts of time spent in other EU countries.

I've volunteered briefly for a bicycle coalition, but became uninterested when it appeared that the focus was geared mainly towards large "charity" style rides and promoting bike facilities. Happily I found a great bunch of people involved in a variety of grassroots cycling projects in L.A. and had a blast with them.

I'm active in local politics and have a keen interest in keeping motorized traffic speeds down, improving public transit, keeping the sidewalks cleared of snow and ice for pedestrians, reducing pedestrian delays at crosswalks and stopping any facilities which are dangerous. These are all uphill battles but there have been some successes.

Cycling gives me immeasurable pleasure and satisfaction in nearly all circumstances.

Sounds like a great life! I'm not sure about whether it's considered useful/good-form to add options to polls on BF, but if it is I'll go ahead and do it. Yours is one of the most important jobs any of us could be doing.

Was a half-time cycling officer for my local council in the 4 years leading up to me getting my pension. Prior to that was a campaigner for the local cycling action group.

Have done ad hoc adult road safety training on the road for individuals and done the old UK cycling proficiency course for year 6 kids - on marked out courses in school playgrounds (schoolyard to you).

Also run kids club and organise fun/skills days/sessions with carload of planks, pallets, seesaws (teeter totters), ramps, limbo bars, and cones. Plus races on and off-road and on closed road circuits.

Only the council job was paid, altho' I often get expenses for some of the other individual sessions - but not the Kids Club - that's a labour of love
