I have a young daughter who is mentally ******ed. It is extremely insulting when posters use "******ed" or "******" as a synonym for stupid or whatever. It turns my daughter into an insult. My daughter is not an insult, she is a real person. I think this word clearly violates the forum guidelines. It's a slur against a class of people, just like racist words. I'd like to see the mods do something about it - perhaps add it to the censored word list? That would at least make people think about it when they see it blacked out in their posts.

And I would throw in 'retarted' as well, if this is found to be a good suggestion.
I can certainly sympathise, boneshake.

It would depend on the context. There are legitimate uses for the word as well. What I would suggest is to use the report function when it's used in a derogatory or attacking manner and it WILL be dealt with.

That's encouraging to hear, Tom. Thanks. That course of action was my first idea, but I didn't know if it would happen. So I'll report it, starting with the one I just encountered that made me come over here.
You're right that it has a legitimate use, and now that you mention it, I get irritated sometimes when other sites censor the word when I'm using it correctly.

I don't think we want to put it on the language filter, but please do report it. I do wish people would remember that there are real human beings behind our user IDs who are reading their thoughtless words. :(

:P -? .. srsly.. What necessity does this word ''******ed (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/******ed)'' have within a forum that is dedicated to bike! related!! topics!!!.. :D -?
It is a word with very little potential for 'use' here .. it is a word with very 'great' potential for misuse!! <--(btw; 'duh' )
As boneshakes said; The overwhelming majority ppl who make use of it here are obviously 'not' meaning-fully acquainted with the meaning of the word! hence they are prone to put it to misuse - and erode away the true significance of the word bit by bit with every improper utterance. Not only is it misused to 'degrade' other ppl -- but when misused in such a manner it is insulting to their own intelligence as well! - It insults everybody's intelligence - and it also corrupts the meaning of the word at the same time!
Whenever a word is intentionally misplaced - it get's forcibly distorted in a way that will render meaning to the surrounding context -- and this process undermines the perceptual potency of the concept - the one that it's 'supposed' to be serving!!
And the greater the tendency towards misuse - the greater the consequence to both the clarity and to the 'perceived' importance of the 'original' underlying concept.
There is no good reason to permit it's misuse .. and many reasons to fight against it!!
Oh, yeah.. except on ''prin·ci·ple'' .. <--
^^ sorry.. but I had to mention that 'principle' thing - because you know if this thread goes on long enough - some idiot is going to mention the :P word sooner or later in defense of something or other. And I am armed with a ''principled'' ( <-- :D  ) diatribe - if or when it comes to that..
But for now I will just say this; think of all the 'principles' that you ppl would be helping to 'preserve' if you used the tools available to you to help impede it's useless abuse and degradation.
So.. yeah you all 'can' do your part to slow the spread of ignorance in your little niche of teh internets - if you choose to do so.. You have the technology!!
Given enough time -somebody is going to complain that filtering yet another word is an insidiously slippery slope of ''political correctness'' suppressing our freedoms of expression and that 'sooner or later' we're not going to have enough permissible words in the english language to carry out an intelligent discussion.''
^^^
Any-person who tries to put forward such an argument is most probably not capable of carrying out an intelligent conversation in this first place! .. In fact they will be far more likely to sound more 'intelligent' - when forced to communicate within the constraints a filter.. because they are often the ones most who are likely to rely on the excessive use of filtered words in the first place! And such ppl are also the same ones who misuse words and contribute to the degradation of their significance

btw, apologies for any unnecessary or excessive italicising/highlighting .. I'm not sure whether it's more helpful or distracting .. or what ? ..
I'm leaving it as is tho.. (hence this post).

Actually, I prefer the way you're handling it to a language filter. I just didn't know you guys would take it this seriously. I'm not used to that. Thanks for getting it.

Thanks. But "retarted" is such an ironic thing to write that it should speak for itself. Kinda like this guy:

I am with Tom on this as there are legit reasons for using the word and then there are times that it is as used as a slur directed toward people with disabilities.
As one who spent more than a decade working with people who had developmental disabilities and after having grown up with step brothers with physical disabilities, I have found that there are more ******ed people in the general population.
These are people who lack empathy and compassion for their fellow men and women...people that are are ignorant, xenophobic, and too often, racist.
When I used to go out with the guys (the clients I worked with) they would often see people doing really stupid things and say, "Now... THAT'S ******ed".
