Anyone out there tour with doggies. My dog goes everywhere with me. I haven't gone on tour with her yet but am contemplating a trailer.

Just looking for thoughts on how best to carry a dog while on tour.

Who could leave a dog this cute at home?

We'll be taking our dog on the PanAm leaving in June. We've never toured with him but have heard of plenty of people who have. I've got a couple of blog entries about taking him - check them out here:

I have done some short tours (>300 mi) with my mini dachshund in one of these and towing a BOB trailer www.midnightpassproducts.com/petcruiser/wicker-cruiser.php
worked out well and the company was very welcome

I carry my dogs everywhere. Last one was 17lb and went in a milk crate on rear rack. Currently have a 7lb Yorkie service dog. She goes in a special doggy basket over handlebars. It has a built in rain poncho, 2 pockets, harness safety clip, and folds flat. Here is a link

I've been wanting to get another German Shepherd but I'm concerned about leaving the dog alone at home too much while I'm out biking. I'm considering something like a Burley Cub trailer to bring the dog along with me but I have no idea how much extra effort towing a large dog and trailer will require or how awkward it will be.

Anyone touring with larger dogs?

Here's a story of guy who's hauling a larger dog on the Pan American Highway from Alaska to Argentina.

I wonder how tough it is going across borders with a dog in tow. It is already tough enough without. I live in Central America and borders are not fun.

I have not had problems coming through airports with the dog. I have all the right paperwork and get the rubber stamp. I believe you need to have the dog checked out by a vet within 15 days of crossing a border. Just some thoughts when thinking about those doing the pan-am

We've heard it should be fine all through South America - Central America is the unknown. But the good thing about Central America is that hte countries are small enough that if we had to go to the capital city to find a vet, we aren't looking at days and days of riding a bus to get there! What I've heard about south America is that they really don't care about the animal at all - and don't even ask for the papers. They do in the airport, but not the land crossings. That being said, we will be prepared.
