Living Car Free - why bikes are unpopular

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

If they start biking they'll get in shape.
That is what is happening with me. I know it works. The trick is just to start.

One does not have to be in good shape to start riding a bicycle. Get a bike with easy gearing and a comfortable position, and anyone can ride a couple of miles. ANYONE.
Unfortunately, someone who buys a bike for serious commuting intention will usually try to ride the whole distance the first day after picking up the bike. With the usual debilitating results. Something about people does not allow them to entertain the concept of riding 1 mile round trip the first day, 2 miles the second . . . . . . and maybe three weeks later actually try doing the intended commute.
