As Los Angeles struggles to restore its namesake river, a considerable obstacle has arisen -- NBC Universal, which is trying to block a public bike path from traversing its property along the waterway.

The flap over the long-planned path comes as the company is touting the green credentials of a massive residential development proposed for its back lot. So, while the studio paints itself as a friend of the environment -- its real estate project will have hiking trails -- others see moguls trying to keep the public at bay.

One bike advocate said Universal executives told him they feared that people would use the path to lob unsolicited screenplays onto the studio's nearby production lot -- something that apparently happens at other spots when a Universal film scores big at the box office.

Only in LA could a fear of bad writing block the expansion of a bike path.

Can't they just put big recycling bins there to catch the scripts?

Ah yes, Universal and their "green" initiatives.

When I was there, I tried to get the company to support and push "Ride Your Bike to Work" day and was given a very quick "no." They didn't support employees riding their bikes because "there was no safe way to get to the lot on the street."

I wonder how they could fix that problem... hmmmm.... perhaps... maybe... a BIKE PATH?

I wonder how they could fix that problem... hmmmm.... perhaps... maybe... a BIKE PATH?No kidding. There are something like 6000 employees on that lot. And I'm sure a bike path would help sell a bunch of them to ride to work more regularly.

Stan, Scoot and I were the only ones I know who did it fairly often, but I'm sure a lot of the park employees would welcome the chance to do that instead of the bus or subway.
