Introductions - I miss riding

Its hard to get back into riding when youre saving up for a house... :(

If you want to ride badly make sure you do whatever you can to get out there. I understand saving for a house is very difficult but not everything cycle related costs. If you don't have a bike borrow one, or get a cheap one. Cycling can be quite cheap if you do it right, you may not have the best kit or the best gear but you'll be riding and that's what really matters.

If you are interested in cycling on a tight budget, sometimes a Vintage Bike can be a great approach.

Check out the Classic & Vintage forum and browse around for some ideas.

Cycling is good for your health, and can save money too (check out Utility Cycling for ideas on shopping etc, and Commuting to learn about how some people ride to work) Even in those forums, there is some dscussin of bikes beyond your budget, but you don't need a whiz bang bike to rise, look more for the concepts of how to use your bike productively.

Good luck on finding a way to ride.

need the new bike fever to get back into it? As stated above, cycling doesnt have to be expensive. get something cheap and enjoy crushing people on it. I rode a 200 dollar bike across the US this past summer. perfect!

hey I had a kidney transplant on Jan 16th, I have a broken foot (severe fracture, too) and it's 3 degrees outside with about 4 feet of snow.
within about three weeks of having the transplant, I was back on my fluid trainer, messing around on my 21 year old road bike. hahaha

It's an addiction. If you want it badly enough, you'll find an excuse. :smile:

Dump/Re-Use Center/Goodwill/Salvation Army. Find a lugged road bike. Replace tubes and/or tires and clean up. I kept up with guys riding carbon fiber and team outfits on a old dumpstered bike + t-shirt/army shorts for quite a while, I still have one for my winter beater and another set up for distance riding.

Gear is gear. 5-10 lbs heavier isn't that big of a difference as long as you get it running smooth and it fits. I would take a 35 lb. 30 year old tank that fits over a nice new carbon bike that is an inch or two too small.

Just wait until you get the house.

There a plenty of decent bikes out there that don't have to cost an arm and a leg and will provide you with much riding enjoyment.

I volunteer at our local bike co-op and we specialize in getting people on bikes for not a lot of money... most of our very decent reconditioned bikes sell for >100.00. We receive such a high number of quality bikes that we rarely bother to put time and effort in department store / lesser quality bikes.

I recently built up an SS commuter for our shop (I already have enough bikes) and we'll probably sell it for $120.00 which is the going rate for these builds... the work I did isn't anything a person with reasonable mechanical skills could not do and perhaps even do for less.

I miscommunicated that, I shouldve said "Its hard to get back into riding when youre bike is in pieces, you work 10 hour days, youre far from the nearest trail, and all your time is spent on your new marriage, your soon to be new house and your career."

I have a bike, its just in pieces in the garage. Now that summer is approaching and Im done with college, Im going to try my best to squeeze in a few miles a week.
