what do all you cool single speed guys think of the specialized P1? It looks like a pretty rad set up for reasonable price. I was thinking of getting one with all the money the gov't has thrown at me to go to school. Someone said I have to pay it back someday, but I don't believe them.

It is pretty cool, but for just a little more you get one with gears.

Edit: I realize this is heresy for this forum, but I had to point it out.

Got a student loan or was it a grant?

Hey Tim,

Shouldn't you be buying textbooks, beer and condoms with my tax money?

Buddha: how am I supposed to get to the store to buy the beer if I don't have at least two or three bikes in the back room?

I bought a bunch of cider and some Kettle One vodka and the books I needed for my classes and I've still got about $2,000 left for the semester in loans. I had grants that paid for tuition.

If you've got 2G's left then don's sell youself short with a SS MTB. Build something interesting like a fixed gear cyclocross bike. Start with a cross check or similar frame and just have fun. Make youself a bike that you can hammer on the trails and still use to make it to class on time (fast)
Which reminds me, the most useful bike a man can own in college is an old beater tandem. Ride to class solo, and pick up a 'friend' for the ride home. You'd be amazed how easy it is to pick up chicks riding solo on a tandem. Mind blowing.
So that's what I'd suggest, a cross bike and a tandem.

My best pick up move with a bike was the ghost ride dismount into the bike rack with my old beater.

my roomie used to have a P1, and i rode it a couple of times. it's definitely priced well, and it's a fun bike. the cassette hub is a nice touch. here's what i didnt like:
-the frame is aluminum, and it's an anchor!! SS should make for lightweight stuff, but the P1 weighed more than my rockhopper
-i'd prefer it had a front brake, instead of just the rear brake

otherwise, i enjoyed the p1 immensely. and i dont care bout who hates 'em; disc brakes are cool in my book.

Yo legalize_it,

Sorry about the long lag. I do indeed live in Philly, but my mtb is currently in pieces as I prepare to have it converted to a true SS frame. When the project is finished I will track you down, though.

As for the SS rally, I missed it this year, but I attended the 2002 rally. My memories of the event are pretty fuzzy...I am told it was much fun.
