She was speeding, AND texting; The cyclist ran the light. While both parties bear some of the fault, still Ifeel the driver bears most of the burden, as they are riding a vehicle which is far more dangerous and capable of causing harm.

The article does say 'he' went through the red light.

I think what may have occured is that he was not able to cross the intersection in time, and the driver wasn't even paying attention on her 45mph approach, never seeing the cyclist entering the intersection on yellow/red because she was texting, and the collision occured. Chances are the accident would've been avoidable if the girl was simply paying attention; 45 to naught can be done in a small amount of space if you can react as quickly as possible. Texting while driving is disgusting behavior, and it's good to see someone punished for their blatant disregard for public safety. The sentence seems appropriate.

The cyclist may have ran the light, and if he did, he has paid the ultimate price. It's really hard to tell from the way that article was written.

OK, the posted article was poorly written. The cyclist did go through a red light.
