I've seen a number of companies now selling an elixir (Cliff Bar, Camelbak) vs a regular sports drink. What is meant by this? Is there a difference (real, or imagined)?

Just marketing. Not saying they aren't helpful, just that there is nothing tangible or unique tied to the word elixir. It's surprising, actually, considering the snake oil connotations that have historically accompanied the term.

I agree that the word elixer is just sales taalk but you need to read the content labels. I use Camelbak Elixer because it contains no sugar or sweeteners and essentially has only a few calories. Most sports drinks have sugar and replenish electrolytes and provide carbs (and calories). I'm diabetic so I prefer to use the Elixer for the electrolytes and eat something (Golden Harvest bars) for the carbs. It gives me better control and is more satisfying. If carbs and sugars weren't a concern I'd do the bars and the drinks.

Yeah, I was gonna say the elixir probabyl has less sugar. And tastes worse.

The Camelbak ones are awful. I'll stick with water.
