Sunday only for me. I'm excited though.
I'm in for saturday.
Have any of you raced it before? How is the course?
That reminds me, packet pickup starts in 5 mins.

Are they really that fast? When you're going that fast, how far ahead of you can you see? I have trouble with speeds that fast if I don't have a clear view of what's ahead of me
As an aside.... Is this a rolling enclosure race, or yellow line fun?

Yeah, no ****. Was that 2003 or 2004 when some guys went to the hospital in this race?
I was flying down Far West at 50 one day and this little faun decided to try to make it in front of me. We were both really freaked out -- little guy couldn't get any hoof traction to get out of my way. I squeaked around him, but that was some scary crap.

2003, Yeah I've had more than one 'encounter' with the Austin deer population. Someone told me there are more deer than people in Travis county.
I'll be there tomorrow. Second race ever. I'm hoping the hills will put me at a slight advantage over some of my fellow 5s. We shall see!

Because you are especially skilled in evading deer at 50Mph?
It's my third. If you're in the 5B's then good luck. If you're in the 5A's, i'll see you there :)

No special skills avoiding deer, just hoping the climbs split the group up a little before the finish, as I am an okay climber but have no sprint. I am in the 5As as well, so see you there. I'll be the guy with the giant elk antlers on my helmet.

Yeah, that's gonna be my problem. RacerEx up there exercising his W/kg denominator on me  I'll be trying to get a teammate into the break though, if not myself.

I'll be course marshelling the 5a race, but I am racing in the 5b. Say hi to me if you see me walking around... I will be in a texas cycling shirt. I am like 5'10" or so... I look way younger than 19. haha
edit: Here is a picture of me. A great one at that haha
Wow, that's one fun course.
I only stayed with the pack until the first climb of the 2nd lap (of 4 for the Cat5's), but hooked up with a small paceline and managed to finish without getting lapped by any of the other fields on the course. Experienced my first elbow rub with another rider at 35-40 mph without incident, and got to work on my deer avoidance skills.
All in all a good day, considering i'm too slow to keep up.
How did it go for you guys?
Yeah, that was huge fun. i am feeling like a chump for not signing up for tomorrow's races!
I was doing pretty well until I missed a break of maybe ten guys on the last lap. I tried really hard to bridge up but just ended up in my own no-mans land for a long time. I finally finished with three or four other guys that caught me. We were probably 20 seconds back of the leaders.

Wow, a break in the 5s! Cool. Sucks to have missed it, but glad you had a good time.
I haven't seen the course before, how's it compare to Pace Bend as far as the hills go?
Can't help you there, I've never done Pace Bend. The Lago course is a 5-mile circuit with probably 250-300 feet of climbing each lap. Not a huge amount, but enough to string out the 5s like I was hoping. (Except I couldn't execute my plan of staying at the front.) There are only a couple of tight turns, and a small but fast descent near the end of the lap. Very short uphill right at the finish. Apparently Sunday's course differs slightly.
Have fun tomorrow!

It was a lot hillier than pace bend. It hurt. But the descents on the other side are a lot of fun, unless you are dodging crazy***** cat 5's who have never ridden in a group before... and enjoy screwing you over right before the finish line with their lack of self control... >:O
But it is fast, and it is catered to climber-types.

The 1.3 mile climb up the back side of the course is more of a series of short climbs seperated by flats and false flats. I don't remember any part that seemed like a long sustained climb.
The front side of the course has some fast downhill sections, but is non-technical. There was never a need to brake for an upcoming turn after a downhill stretch.

Thanks for the recon work guys. I do indeed think I'll be relegated to team support :D That W/kg denominator... you know. The hills at Pace Bend weren't a challenge, but I'm thinking these might be.
Should be fun -- I enjoy playing main-field defense for teammates in breaks <evil laugh>.
I've got my flat race coming up in three weeks... Ronde Von Manda. We've got me and a Cat II sprinter going for the jugular in that one.
I'll see you guys tomorrow - Cat 5B. I've heard that the climb splits up the group pretty good - I can't wait!

if you look at a topo, the back side is all up hill... there is such a minimal drop that it won't show up. It's not that steep... but it's long.
And it was technical for the 5b group... we had some seriously sketchy riders.
Funny, it seemed like the 5A race was really not sketchy at all. I was pleasantly surprised. Even the guy that was all elbows at Walburg was on good behavior.
