The runtime is crap with two 18650. If you can use an external pack. Then it would be blast.

That's what I get with mine running on two protected AW 18650's! :)

Wait till I get the driver and optics for my 6 Cree Q5.
I'm already seeing stars with this test unit I have. http://www.flickr.com/photos/49184877@N00/

The quad cree flashlights seem a little on the big side.. If you want a nice triple cree, look at the elektrolumens Fire-Lion triple cree light, runs on one 18560 battery and gives 500+ lumens for over an hour.. Easy enough to carry a spare battery just in case.. I have bought many flashlights from them and they are a quality product and made to last..

He also makes a 5 cree drop in for the 3D maglite that puts out close to 1000 lumens.. 2.5 runtime on nimh or 4 hours on alkaline batteries.. Not bad for a 1000 lumen light..

According to the specs they're Q4 bin. If they're being driven at their rated 3 watts and the heatsinking keeps the junction temp down to 25deg.C then the LEDs are good for about 880 lumens total. I would allow about 5% loss through the optics, so about 840 lumens effective output.

Thats what the factory rates them at. Actual output is around 450-500 though!

Actual out the front lumens are typically 30% to 35% less than emitter lumens, due to reflector losses and the front "lens" losses. That would give more like 580 lumens out the front. Of course, its hard to compare with other lights because manufacturers tend to spout emitter lumens and not lumens out the front of the light.
The other thing is that the Romisen does not drive these four Cree LEDs at 700 mA (or close to 3 watts as you say). They are actually driven at about half that, so cut the 580 lumens number down about 40% to 350 lumens.
Still, its a pretty good value for a 4 Cree light if you can get one (they seem to be out of stock now).
