I will be in the "extreme western hills" of Cincinnati (like...Lawrenceburg, IN) this summer. I used to live there but was not a cyclist at the time (not to mention those pesky casinos have changed everything). Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on rural-but-not-overly-dangerous routes for this area, esp. in those lovely rolling hills. And also maybe racing info. I doubt I will have time to do any but you never know. Timeframe is early August.

TIA

Mapmyride.com has a "show public rides on the map" feature. It puts a flag on the map for each ride's starting location. I can usually find some interesting rides using this, but there's very few listed for southwest Indiana. There's a lot in northern Kentucky and the eastern side of Cincinnati.

Pull up this mapped ride near Aurora (http://www.mapmyride.com/route/united-states/in/dillsburo/108910030), then you can move the displayed map area and pull down the "Find" tab, then select "show public rides on the map".

For regional group rides, you can view or subscribe to the Cincinnati Cycle Club ride line (http://groups.google.com/group/CycleCincinnati). 7 Hills Racing club (http://www.7hillsracing.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1) does training rides (http://www.7hillsracing.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_google_maps&Itemid=38) that are popular with racers and civilians.

Cool, thanks, I did not know about that site. I am not averse to coming across the river to join up with you N. Ky folks either, though I'm not sure how much time I'm going to have.

Reminds me of the old joke, you can substitute/reverse roles as needed to humiliate the opposite side of the river, but it goes something like..."The Hoosiers and Kentuckians were having one of their famous big fights. The Kentuckians got real mad and started throwing sticks of dynamite across the Ohio River at the Hoosiers. The Hoosiers must've been pretty mad, too, 'cause they were lighting them and throwing them back" ;)

Thanks again!

If you ride north on Highway 1 a few miles there's a nice state park a bit north of Brookville. It shouldn't be much more than a 40 mile ride one way. Decent amount of small hills.

Thanks. Actually I used to live in Lawrenceburg and worked a summer job up in Brookville (hauling canoes)...used to drive Hwy 1 to get there. I remember that being a nice route to drive but thinking about riding it makes me wonder. I remember a lot of fatalities on that road, people driving way to fast. And knowing some of the folks that live out that way, seeing a "sissy cyclist" might increase my chances of being a target. But I guess we have that here, too...

Plenty of hills out of Brookville, also the Cincinnati club has a Ghost Ride in October out of St Leon, In that has some decent climbing.
