Bicycle Mechanics - Storing/disposing cleaning solvents

I use diluted Simple Green to clean my bikes. When I'm done, I store the used solvent in plastic containers in a ventilated area in my garage, then take it to my local transfer station when they do their monthly hazardous stuff collection. Is there a better way to store cleaning solvents? Is there a container made specifically for this kind of storage?

Simple Green is non-toxic and biodegradable. It goes down the drain or simple runs off onto the lawn.

Taking it to a transfer station is overkill to the extreme.

If you're concerned about conservation, find as airtight a container as you can to store it in, glass jars work well. Let the solvent settle and pour it off the sludge at the bottom. Pour it into a new container and only dispose of the sludge. You'll get the most use out of it this way, and it costs very little.

that's a great idea. i have multiple bikes, and when i'm done cleaning them the used simple green is completely loaded with chain oil and grease. i'd rather not pour it down my drains or into my lawn.

Empty metal paint cans are available from the local home box stores. They have a nice wide opening, seal tight, and won't break like glass or split like plastic.
