Touring - Access “your” computer by hijacking “there’s” while on tour.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Bicycle touring with a Lap Top computer can be a pain and your always worried about it getting damaged or stolen. I found this Instructables while wasting time on my computer at home.

This thing is fabulous! Take most any PC and boot it from a USB stick with all your files making it exactly like the computer you left behind at home. It bypasses the OS on the hard drive on the computer and loads everything from the USB stick. The Wi-Fi dongle makes sure you can access the Internet from the computer you hijacked if the installed hardware on the computer your hijacking is not Linux compatible. I added a USB SD card reader as well as the Wi-Fi dongle so I could upload photos and videos from my camera as well. If your going on an extended tour and you need to stop and use a Library or other public access computer this handy device can make that computer “yours” for a while anyway. When you leave it just shut it down leaving no trace of any of your personal information as the hard drive in the hijacked computer was never used.

Cool I have though of doing something like this with a puppydog linux distro. The only problem is some internet cafe computers and library do not always have a usb port avalible or the box is not avalible to rebbot. The box can be locked up in a box, or BIOS is not set to boot off usb and / or bios is locked so you can not cahnge it (without opening it up). So it is not fool proof but it is a good idea. Another idea would be to run a vnc server on your home computer and carry a vnc veiwer on your usb stick (you can also access through a brouser but small screen).
