How can you be a sandbagger if your in the p123 class?

Collegiate C road race DePauw University. Really fast pace and sprint started super early. Finished 16 out of like 70? maybe. 8 mile course with about 350 feet of climbing a lap, but all the hills were just rollers so you only had to climb the last half of the hill. Crit tomorrow.

i race today. my right calf cramped up,fell off the back (probably more from pure suckage than the cramp) on a 9 mile loop. somehow, my last lap was slightly faster than my first though. i guess it was because people thought it would be a good idea to brake on descents

- that and the idiot police officer directing traffic at an intersection had us turn the wrong way. by the time they realized it, most of our 80 or so field was going the wrong way.

I started a thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?p=6260949#post6260949) in the socal forum, but the short of it was that I am pretty much a permanent mid-packer. Got somewhere around 30th out of 60, but at least I outsprinted my group. Bottom line is that climbing is my limiter, I have to lose about 15 pounds to be competitve climbing again. Edit: I never thought I would say this, but I am starting to like crits and am actually looking forward to tomorrow's. Should be interesting, there is a prime on every lap...

If you loose 15 lbs the amount of power that would be lost at a result would not give you the power to weight ratio to be a better climber-

Have your body fat checked. Try to get it to 6% if you can - ssssllloooowwwwllllyyy. And find big, nasty hills and repeat them often.

Not a sandbagger in this case. Maybe they mean that if he's still a cat 3, then he'll be a sandbagger in a Cat 3 only race.

Well... it was only 20K... and I eat a lot at night. junkie stuff I know I shouldn't. I can grab a lot of "stuff" on my thighs, stomach, and love handle area. Last tested I was 15% bf. I know I can be 135 without losing power, thats what I was when I had my best climbing performance. Edit: plus I've gained about 5 pounds since I cut my mileage way down.

Are speaking about UMD specifically? If so, yes, that could make sense.

But, if you're speaking in general terms, there are plenty of racers who could lose 15lbs and not lose any power.

Hell, I hit the scales at 142 this morning, and I'm planning on losing 5lbs more.

OK race report:
The 5's started out with about 40 or so people, from what i could see. Nice easy rolling start (like 15). One guy goes of the front almost at the gun and another two are just up the road, not really pulling away, trying to warm up i guess. About a mile in I end up on the front and i figure that instead of pulling, i may as well bridge up to the "break" of two, 30 seconds or so later there was three. We continue just rolling along, picking up the pace just slightly to about 20 (remember tailwind) and just figured we would jump in with the pack when they caught us. Well about 5 miles down the road we look back and see we have about 1 minute maybe a little more on the field, they were still coasting basically. We kinda looked at each other and decided to start to actually put some work in. 10 miles later the official comes up from behind and tells us we have a 2 minute gap on the field. There is still the one guy ahead of us by about 1:30 though. Now we really start working, taking pulls at 30-32. A few miles later i look back and see a teammate trying to bridge up, so I drop back a little and pace him up the the break knowing that I'm going to need him at some point today.
We continue trading pulls until the climb, when our pack of 4 drops to three, not for long though. About 300 yards later we pick up the guy who went on the first solo break. He stays with us for most of the climb, but cracks near the top. It's down to three again, but as we roll through the feed zone and slow down to get some goodies, a chase pack comes out of nowhere and all of a sudden our pack of 3 in now about 7.
We get to the bottom of the hill and realize that its rollers and false flat all the way to the finish. The guy that was in the break ( wess, who i later learned is a Pro mountain biker, and Allen who is a Elite marathoner)with us from the beginning starts attacking trying to wittle down the group. Finally one sticks, but I lose my teammate and its down to four of us. Were about 65 miles in at this point and im starting to cramp. I cut my work down a little at the front and seem to recover but i know i have to be cautious at this point because i dont want to bonk.
With about 5 miles to go wess attacks again, because no one wanted to seem to work. The three of us who are left try to organize a chase, but the one guy, who name i didnt get was dying and would pull to the front and wouldnt pull off, just slow down. That allowed wess to get a little more time on us. Allen and i managed to finally drop the other guy, but realize we are really going to have to work if were going to catch wess. We start hammering, and right after i take a pull, allen attacks, and it's just enough to gap me by about 5 yards, which just happens to be just enough to hold me off at the line. We roll through about 15 seconds behind each other for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
Overall it was a great race. Probably the most fun I've ever had racing. The tailwinds definitely helped and we averaged something like just over 26mph. I finished with nothing left in the tank and felt Extremely sorry for the people that looked like they were riding back. We stopped and asked a few if they wanted a ride, but were turned down. Im also very glad we finished early, because on the way home the winds were just brutal. I stepped out of the car to stretch at like 1ish and was almost blown over. They must have been twice as strong as when we were riding.

In addition i think I broke every power record i have over 5min and almost matched my 5 and 1 min.
260 average for the three hour ride with 284 normalized
288 average for 1 hour with 308 normalized.
311 average for 20 min with 313 normalized. Im very happy with these. That bumps me up to 4.29w/kg. (not even enough to win a 5's race.)

Total waste of time and energy. Teammates aren't carebears that need a hug. If he bridges and makes the selection then great. Use him up (steal his water and put him to work). But if he doesnt then stiff sh^t.

tsk tsk tsk. I thought everyone knew that on short road races feed zones are for looking but no touching! Two bidons is ample. You should have realised your teammate was no good as well and taken his water and told him to go back to the bunch. I would of.

Race needs to be over 110km for a feed zone, non? Is it different in the US?

I think I would have gotten his bottle, too, if I new he couldn't help the break. I would have sent him into the feed zone and kept the break moving, though. Maybe he could have chased back up and gotten something to me. If not, he has something to eat or drink while he rides to the finish:D.

Yea the race was definitely long enough to warrant a feed zone.
When we rolled through the break we only had about 5 guys together and we spaced out and then regrouped after.
Some of the people i saw rolling back had numbers pinned on the same way we did for the race.
Oh, and the fact that i had a teammate there, helped immensely later down the road, when i didn't have to respond to every attack. Would have helped even more if he had been there at the finish. We would have been the only team with two in the break.

I had the most awesomest race evar. First of all, I didn't win. But I did put a severe hurting on myself and a lot of others today. I bridged to two break aways, attacked several times, and was in a break away in the last mile. Three of us were killing it and when I looked back after my pull, I didn't see the peleton. Then, like a swarm of locusts, they were there. 200m we held them off, 100 m we were devoured. One of the guys in the break with me blurted out a large, angry-filled, "FU**!!!!" I smiled through the absolute pain that was the end of our break.

After the race, several guys came up to me to tell me how strong I was and that I put a hurting on them in the breaks. That alone beat the 6th place yesterday. I left nothing out there. Nothing.

Thanks guys. The sixth place check was nice. But the race came to me, you know? I just wound up hammering on the last climb to finish. Today I was in full race form. During the first break away, I took 3 huge pulls in our rotating paceline. During it, I kept talking to the other gents to keep it. I was throwing some positives their way that we could pull it off. Then on what would be my last pull I heard, "I got nothing left man." And I looked back to see them all fade. Then we hit a corner and the wind was on me. I held up and waited - maybe shouldn't have. But I had a blast. My legs are destroyed.

yes, but i'm in the US for the next 2 months for work, and won't have as many opportunities.

missed one yesterday (too lazy to drive 2.5 hours just to train at race pace), and next weekend the big race is 6 hours away (the rouge roubaix). too expensive to drive down, and most likely get a flat.

hopefully i'll manage to catch up with pcaddy at the last SS race, in PP. otherwise, chances are my first race will be in May.
