General Cycling Discussion - Anyone know how to build a bike parking stand?

Hi, I hope this is the right subforum for this.

I want to build a place to park my bike, similar to this one (click for picture) (http://www.cyclesportandfitness.com/images/parking_rack.jpg). I know there may be better options, but I really need one like this, and I need to build it myself.

I have googled for instructions to build something like this, but have found nothing. Does anyone have a good link for this project?

A 2 X 4 is actually 1 1/2" thick. That's a pretty good spacing for the wheel holder uprights unless some of your bikes have wide, knobby mountain bike tires. If you build one out of wood, be sure to screw it together because, if you nail it, it'll be too wobbly.

Indoor or outdoor rack?

For an outdoor rack I suggest some galvanized pipes embedded vertically in a block of concrete.

for an indoor rack something like you show made of wood or pvc pipe would work, if you can lock thieves out.

That's a nice stand even if you don't use it in a truck bed. I may try to build one myself.

Some great ideas here. Wish I had seen this thread 3 days ago. I just built a rack for the back of the truck out of some scrap 2x4s I had. It works and is functional but it is not pretty. Weighs a ton! I do need racks for storage and I think I will go the PVC route and build a (2) holds 3 pvc racks. I knew there had to be something better than I had come up with wood. I do like the wooden rack qmcttr built. Nice! I guess if I can paint my beast of rack maybe I will post a pic for some laughs (well, it makes me laugh anyway!).

Oh and a side story. Last weekend I was trying to figure out to make the thing and was looking for ideas around the house/shed - trying to come up with a plan. Then I spot it! A plastic patio chair with the slits on the back of the chair, cut out 1 or 2 slits and and then flip it over upside down. Wa-La a quick and dirty bike rack + a chair to sit on when the ride is done. My wife would have nothing to do that idea and said she would not ride anywhere with me if that is the rack I use in the truck! LOL...

Didn't know that you were looking for a rack for the back of a truck. A few of my fellow cyclists with trucks simply took a 2 x 8 0r 2 x 10 and attached quick release brackets to the wood. They remove the front wheel and attach the bike to their "rack". The brackets are like those on roof racks that require removal of the wheel.

I made one similar to the jpg you linked to. I welded it out of bed frames, but it could be bolted together, too, if you don't weld. I used two side rails for the long top & bottom pieces, so the rack is nearly 6ft long, enough room to park nearly a dozen or so bikes if you set it up where you can get to both sides. For the upright pieces, I used some shorter bed frame parts. There was very little cutting involved.

Bed frames are a great source of mild steel, btw. Bedding companies give them away with matresses but people often don't want or need them. You can get them at garage sales for $1-$5, especially if you go close to noon, when the sellers are getting nervous about getting rid of stuff. I got a brand new, king-sized frame for $1 once.

Lowes has them, I've got two. I also did the PVC one as shown in the UtahMTB link. Wasn't really satisfied with it, prone to tipping. And with the time/effort/cost, the $20 at Lowes was money well spent.
