I have a 2001 Rock Shoc Judy XC. They have the red springs (160-180 lb. rider), but the bathroom scale says I need the black springs (220+).
My question: how is the wrong spring going to affect (effect?) my riding if I'm just commuting on poorly maintained asphalt roads with a few RR crossings? If it matters, it's on an aluminum rigid frame.
Thanks,
Tom

Not much for commuting. You can preload the heck out of those springs and get a stiffer ride. If you were off-roading I'd say upgrade to the black.

In comparison to dirt bike riding(motorcycles), the correct spring rates make a huge difference in riding feel and support in the single track trails. I would say that if you are only using it for commuting and not doing anything off-road you will be ok, but could be a better ride with the other springs. If you decide to do more serious off-road riding, then I would suggest you look into the better springs.

I guess the question I would ask is are you bottoming them out a lot? If yes then a spring change would be a good idea. Is your fork to mushy when you ride? That can steal some performance from you? If no then you are fine.
